Passenger plane catches fire after a collision at Tokyo airport • FRANCE 24 English

And we start then with those dramatic images from Tokyo Airport today where a passenger plane is reported to have collided with a coast guard aircraft the commercial plane was a Japan Airlines flight from the north of the country it had just touched down at the airport

When it appears it made contact with the smaller Coast Guard Plane Japanese media reporting today that all 379 passengers on crew on that airb bus flight were safely evacuated before it was entirely engulfed in flames however the Japanese Coast Guard is saying that its pilot has escaped but five other

Crew members remain unaccounted for let’s get the very latest for you um on this then from Tokyo James Sims is a reporter he joins us live there from the Japanese Capital James first of all these are really shocking images we’ve been showing our viewers from Tokyo

Airport today just bring us up to speed as to what the latest is this hour right it was actually yes very shocking because um everybody was sort of glued to their televisions looking at the uh earthquake that happened on uh New Year’s Day which has claimed almost

50 lives so far and there’s still rescue efforts uh undergoing um at this time and so from what we know is uh the uh Airbus a350 jet was coming from subo to uh Tokyo and then after landing it uh apparently hit a Japanese Coast Guard

Plane which was taking Aid to one of the areas that was affected by the earthquake indeed so that must be really shocking for people in Japan that are still sort of digesting the news of that earthquake Aftershock still ongoing and now understanding that one of the planes

Involved was in fact um helping people who were affected there right I mean it was um I hate to say it was just a really bad way to start the new year in Japan first you have the the massive earthquake one of the largest to hit Japan since the 2011 earthquake

Which claimed over 20,000 lives um and then one of the planes which is going to assist people uh you know affected by the Quake it is hit or it hits or runs into a passenger plane uh you know people coming back from their uh visits uh New Year visits to family and

Relatives in other parts of the country and it’s worth emphasizing as it always is you know incidents like this extremely rare in commercial Aviation particularly in Japan which does have a pretty good um air safety record right I think the last major accident in Japan was probably over 20

Years ago um in naguia uh when a plane crash landed and there was a loss of I think about 263 lives so it’s it’s very rare in Japan and it’s also I think very rare in sort of other industrial countries you know like the US Europe um

And Japan and so I think that’s why it’s it’s just very shocking to see you know something like this um you know at Tokyo’s main International Airport
