South Africa’s support for Palestinians endures with genocide case against Israel • FRANCE 24

Morning steuart yes so since October over 23,000 Palestinians we know have been killed and it’s against this backdrop that the genocide dispute was lodged but many South Africans have decried the application at the world Court as it comes at a time that the country faces its own internal challenges including poverty high crime

Rate and a daily death doll of over 50 people including that of children having been briefed by the legal council uh leading the Count’s argument in the heg uh our president s Raposa said South Africa is Duty bound uh to support Palestine as the Country carries its own

History of apartate and human rights abuses now the government maintains that negotiations which it initially says that it will um act as mediator are still the solutions uh to to Gar a peace uh between the two countries tell us then what Israel is is actually accused of in this

Indictment yeah so uh led by an experienced legal council South Africa will request the world Court to order Israel to Halt all military operations in Gaza South Africa does not have to prove actual genocide against Palestinians rather it hopes at this stage to prove genocidal intent now it’s argument today South Africa will

Reference Israeli State officials to prove the country has gone beyond on self-defense and is at a point where its intent is the destruction of not just Hamas but of Palestinians now this court can take up to 10 days to make an order for the interim cessation of violence

And up to 10 years whether genocide did actually take place Unice this comes doesn’t ahead of a general election this year in South Africa the ruling ANC party then being accused of using this case if you like to boost its Pole ratings yeah the aenc have always been

Pro Palestine um they’ve downgraded its diplomatic relations with Israel uh in recent years and by lodging the genocide dispute in the world Court places South Africa in an even more unfavorable position now in South Africa new political parties actually gave their support to thec uh for example change

Starts Now is a new movement and and they said that they fully support this dispute and this application that South Africa brought the main opposition party the Democratic Alliance however they remain neutral in this matter while other opposition parties like the efff um they also put their support behind

South Africa has taken the rare step of bringing a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice because of its war in Gaza. So why is South Africa so supportive of the Palestinians?
