Mayan Train construction mutilates ancient underground cave in Mexico #shorts

Construction of the Mayan Train in southern Mexico has perforated a series of ancient underground caves unique to the Mayan Peninsula, activist group Selvame del Train reported.

Footage shot by Selvame del Tren showed large steel pillars inside the caves carved out of soft limestone bedrock filled with water. Videos also showed large holes on the cave’s floors and ceilings. Activists fear these holes will later be filled up with concrete.

Authorities had previously said the caves were not going to be damaged by the construction, said speleologist Guillermo D’Christy.

The Mayan Train is one of Mexican Presiden Andres Lopez Obrador’s flagship projects. It seeks to boost tourism in the Mayan Peninsula, but environmental activists and scientists argue the construction critically endangers a delicate below-ground ecosystem and essentially splits the jungle in half.
