  1. In some parts of history, i agree. But on the other hand in other parts of history we have been the “good guys”. Its the same for most countries, hardly anyone has a clean slate when looking at historical records.

  2. During the empire? It was British that were the ‘baddies’ before that England wasnt any more of a bad guy than anyone else, take the anglo scottish wars for example, the scots love to try and paint it as ‘evil England bullying innocent victim scotland’ but in reality the vast majority of the anglo scottish wars were started by the scottish invading northern England before being counterattacked.

  3. Hands up all the countries in the world that used their empire at the height of its powers to outlaw the slave trade around the world
    Your welcome

  4. People moan about the bad things but any negatives are entirely outweighed by the industrial revolutions global benefits. You can’t overstate how good that’s been for the species, and it happened in jolly ol’ England!

  5. Germany started two world wars. The French, Spanish and Belgians (yeah, you heard me) were far more brutal colonisers. Britain dragged a significant part of the world out of the dark ages, ushered in two industrial revolutions and turned slavery from a globally accepted practice to the abhorrent act we regard it today. Memes are supposed to be couched in reality, not the petty musings of ill informed lefty revisionists.

  6. History is mostly made up of baddies.

The British weren’t really the worst, just very very successful/efficient in how they took over, colonised and exploited foreign lands. It’s more to do with scale.

    There really weren’t many “goodies.”

  7. Those were uncivilized countries, and for the geopolitical tensions of that time, they were the losers. They were fighting with each other. They were looting each other. What British Empire did is, systematically looted what other wants to loot through anarchy.

  8. If you read the history of the English/ British and come to that conclusion you are naive, gullible or a moron.

  9. I’ve got a degree in history and one (quite large) part of my degree was studying British history. Fun fact: nope, we’re not the baddies. Quite the opposite but try telling Indians that when it’s election season (they criticise the British to gain votes – it’s a tried and tested method in the sub continent).

  10. The rest of the world:

“They bled us white, the bastards. They took everything we had. And not just from us, but our fathers. And our fathers’ fathers.

And what have they ever given us in return?”

  11. Shock horror state has committed atrocities. At least we were the best at empires and invented almost everything

  12. I’m still mad that in GCSE history we did very little British history. Studied the American wars in Korea and Vietnam more. Whilst interesting in their own right, still would have preferred to learn more about my own country.

  13. I was surprised how little British history we’ve learnt in history gcse, I couldn’t have cared less about how Americans were spreading democracy to nam

  14. Better way to frame it – The ruling class were always the baddies. Us peasants didn’t get much of a say.

  15. Ah yes we are such baddies……
    Let’s not mention the ottomans,Mongols,Romans,French,Spanish,Germans,Russians to name a few….

  16. why is it that people on social media only shit on england (because people love to ignore scotlands shitty parts of history and massive role in the BRITISH (not english) empire) because of their bad parts of history? guess what? france also has hundreds of other countries items in their museums, spain and belgium were also horrific colonisers (in some instances, even worse)

  17. They just don’t teach the bad bits. History in my school was 1066, Queen Elizabeth I, abolition of the slave trade, then WW1 and WW2.

  18. Like every country in the world, Britain’s history is made up of amazing accomplishments and awful travestys

  19. No other countries invaded and consolidated power before England..

England was just more successful at it.

  20. The rich, the aristocracy, and the conservative party are responsible for some pretty horrific things. The average British person has tended to suffer at their hands as well.

  21. Entirety? Nah, realistically it’s more 33% – 40%. The rest is significantly more complex than “And then the British Empire arrived”.

  22. We did plenty bad and we did plenty good, as did every other country with a decent amount of history.

  23. Idk man I took gcse history and we spent like a whole year learning about the US, wasn’t much about the UKs history past the gunpowder plot
