Resolute Haley battles ‘nominee-in-waiting’ Trump, envisioning ‘long career in Republican politics’

And for more in the story I’m joined by Dr Andrew Smith director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and a political science Professor thanks so much for being with us good to see you so all signs are pointing to another matchup between Donald Trump and

Joe Biden in November you know but a lot could happen between now and then and as I was looking at the exit poles coming out of of South Carolina last night something caught my eye that about a third of Republican primary voters in South Carolina said they would change

Their opinion about Trump’s Fitness to be president if he’s convicted of a crime so As Trump faces you know these 91 charges and four separate you know criminal trials could a conviction change the equation for him I would say it’s very unlikely uh simply because one of the things that uh

That voters in any country are able to do is rationalize why their candidates better than the other candidate I think that what you’re likely to see is that Donald Trump is going to go on to win frankly he was essentially the nominee in Waiting since winning the New

Hampshire primary uh and we’re basically playing out the string um I don’t think there are a lot of Republic oh excuse me I I think there are a lot of Republicans that are not happy with Trump uh but by the time the nomination comes around and

By the time the election comes around in November they’re going to back up Trump because he is their party’s nominee and they’d rather support the party than have the uh Joe Biden from the other party win why is Nikki Haley staying in this race does she think she’s the kind

Of you know understudy ready to step in in case um you know Trump’s legal problems overtake him uh I I think there’s a little bit of that but that’s something obviously it’s out of the control of the campaign I think she’s really looking forward to 2028 or uh

2032 uh she’s a young a young candidate and I think there are a lot of other people that are waiting for the generational change to occur both in the Democratic party and the Republican party and Haley is looking at her self having a a a a long career in uh

Republican politics so maybe this time around she’s going to take the loss and be the person who’s uh next in line for the uh the 2028 nomination during a speech in South Carolina Donald Trump he made some statements that have been widely seen as as racist saying that

Black voters were drawn to him because of his multiple indictments on these criminal charges let’s just take a a listen to a bit of what he had to say my my the mug shot we’ve all seen the mugshot and you know who embraced it more than anybody else the black

Population it’s incredible you see black people walking around with my mug shot so do comments like these hurt Trump politically are are we just living in a world where he can basically say anything he wants and not lose the support of a majority of Republicans well back in 2016 Donald

Trump said he could shoot somebody on Park Avenue and he wouldn’t lose a vote and I think that’s still the case today uh if you ask me to explain why that’s the case for many people in the country I have no rational reason to explain why

That’s the case but it certainly is true that uh I don’t think anybody anymore is shocked by anything Donald Trump says on the Democratic side there continue to be these concerns about Joe Biden’s Age and and some general election polls show Biden actually losing to Trump in November this obviously has some

Democrats panicked and the New York columnist Ezra Klein recently wrote an article urging Democrats that that it’s not too late to choose another candidate and that it could be done at the convention this summer do you envision a scenario where that could happen only if only if he gets um he

Gets so medically impaired that he’s incapable of really even doing some of the basic things in life uh if he is able to walk around and talk he’s going to be the nominee uh I can’t see that the party really wants to have have anybody else because they have no next

Person in line kamla Harris is not really shown that she’s got the uh the capacity or the popularity to be uh the standard Bearer for the the Democratic party they’re basically looking around and saying that Joe Biden’s not our not a great choice but he’s the only choice

That we’ve got and they’re going to stick with him okay we’ll have to leave it there Dr Andrew Smith director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and a political science Professor thanks so much for joining us here on France 24 that does the for now stay tuned for

Is it political strategy, donor pressure or perhaps hubris? Nikki Haley is vowing “the fight goes on” against Donald Trump, positioning herself as a viable option in case the scandal-plagued Republican frontrunner’s campaign implodes. Haley has gone zero for four in early contests for the Republican presidential nomination, including an embarrassing 20-point drubbing Saturday in her home state of South Carolina where she served as governor. With her path to victory shrinking to the width of a needle’s eye, her decision not to bow out is raising questions about her endgame in a party ruled by Trump, and whether prolonging the nomination battle sets Haley up for a 2028 presidential bid. As Haley soldiers on, despite growing inevitability of Trump, FRANCE 24’s Monte Francis is joined by Dr. Andrew Smith, Director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

  1. Nobody wants a warmonger in the White House! Haley is not for the people but rather for the banksters that will bank roll weapons makers and kickbacks to government officials congressmen and woman senators and the like. She talks about more bloodshed for Ukrainians and more taxes for USA citizens. She is pro Israel so she supports the massacre of Palestinians there too

  2. Nikki haley doesn't deserve to be president…. This election is between a corrupt government "biden" and donald trump .. Plain and simple, if Nicki Hailey, would've kept her mouth shut and stayed out of it. She might have had a future in politics… Now one will trust her!!!

  3. If Trump is convicted i think United States is going to have a civil war…. Trump, Nikki Haley, and joe Biden is very dangerous to American national security, i think JFK Junior would make better president than the rest of the candidates, and hopefully defuse the situation…. other wise i think the United States is going to Head to a major problem on election Day….. I see it coming…..

  4. Do the media Think People a stupid 🀨 you want Trump to go to jail becouse he is not control by the establishment ! Vote Trump 2024 ✨🦾😁 Sheeps !

  5. Trump is going to be convicted for the criminal life he has lead, and will NEVER be president again. Never should have been. He lost the popular vote against Hillary and it is an historical piece of bad luck he won in the electoral college system.

  6. Many Trump voters are cult-like in their mindset; I don't blame them, not completely, I blame the rhetoric, theatrics and propaganda-like messaging that his campaign, devotees (and international handlers and supporters?) pump out. They understand human psychology and are manipulating it to the fullest extent.
