Which spoon is colder? | QI – BBC

Which one do you think is colder the wooden spoon or the metal spoon don’t do it [Laughter] lar I’m okay the metal one the one no no I me to the other one I’m going to say the other one but because you know when you think about the one you shouldn’t

Say I know so I’m the I’m the thicker one Let’s Pretend let’s pretend you never said that so Lara which one is the colder one I have a feeling that it’s the wooden one What are you mean what are you talking about they’re obiously going to be the same AR they why so they are the same why are they the same cuz they’re in the same room it is exactly right so we’re talking about the law of thermodynamics if two bodies are in equilibrium with

The third body they must be in equilibrium with each other unless one of them’s a freezer so these spoons have been in this the same room they in the same room tou in the same air they will be the same temperature okay I did not know that

Let’s pick them up and see which one you think is colder what do you think oh I’ve made the mistake of picking them up in different hands got your hot hand and your cold hand this is cold this feels colder okay so we come on to the second LW of

Thermodynamics basically what happens is that heat will naturally flow from a warmer area to a colder area because your hands Christmas Number One S Christmas number one so one thing we haven’t done on this [Applause] show because the metal spoon is a better conductor of heat and because your hands

Are warm the heat from your hands will flow more readily into the metal spoon it’ll make it feel for you as if it is colder it was used to be someone playing the spoons on the T didn’t it there was someone playing the spoons someone hitting themselves with a tray what’s happened to

Television well it seems to be doing just fine

  1. I got a question for you
    What eavier?
    A kilogramme of steel
    or a kilogramme of feathers.

    That's right, it's a kilogramme of steel.
Because steel is heavier than feathers

  2. I genuinely had quite a heated argument with my old flatmate about this because he insisted on using metal cups for his drinks because, in his words, “it keeps it colder.”

In culminated in me putting an ice cube on both a metal cup and a plastic one to demonstrate how it would melt faster on the metal one.

After this experiment he grabbed both the cups and said, “yeah, but the metal now feels colder.” Honestly, I could have hit him 😂.

  3. Metal spoon is a reasonable answer, since "colder" wasn't precisely defined in the question. The metal spoon takes more heat from your skin. Neither is also a reasonable answer. The wooden seems to be the only clearly wrong answer.

  4. Surely if you are holding both the wooden spoon is colder. Because the heat has conducted from the metal spoon to your hand more efficiently. Therefore your hand heated the metal. Assuming the room is colder than the human body.
