UK sanctions heads of Arctic penal colony where Navalny died • FRANCE 24 English

Other news the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on six individuals in charge of the Arctic penal colony where the Russian opposition leader Alexi naly died last week the European Union is also moving closer to imposing its sanctions as well on Russia to tell us a bit more our foreign editor Philip T is

With me and Philip what can you tell us about these new British sanctions well Nadia this uh this is the first time that sanctions have actually been imposed on members of the penal colony this is on the the head of IT Colonel Vadim khini and five of his deputies who

Are now no longer allowed to travel to the UK and if they have any assets there those assets are going to be frozen the British foreign secretary uh Lord Cameron has said that uh it’s clear that the Russian authorities saw naali as a threat which is why Britain is sanctioning the prison officials

Responsible for his custody uh there are calls in the UK that say well look this doesn’t really go far enough uh Alicia K who’s the chair of the foreign uh Affairs select committee said that more sanctions need to be imposed because basically we don’t know if these

Officials in Russia had any intention of traveling to the UK and probably don’t have any assets there anyway it’s quite a symbolic move but you’re right there are other um sanctions which are on the cards for the next couple of days the EU has already voted for more sanctions to

Be imposed on Russia there was a deal yesterday with EU ambassadors uh announced by the Belgian presidency the council saying that they’d agreed in principle on a 13th package of sanctions for uh the Russians you have to remember that both Britain and the European Union have imposed some of the toughest

Sanctions on Russia since uh the invasion of Ukraine uh back uh in uh 2022 just two years ago and uh in those sanctions 200 extra people have been banned from travel to the EU from Russia this is in the new EU sanctions being announced this week that’s 2,000 people

In all now no longer able to travel to the EU the freezing of their individual and Company assets and what the European Union is trying to do now also is to try to uh sanction other countries like usbekistan China Iran the United Arab Emirates because they say that Russia is

Getting round the sanctions by exporting to them and then they’re exporting back to the European Union and that’s why these sanctions are going to hit harder and one last point is that the US is also uh set to introduce a new round of sanctions which is due to be announced

Tomorrow uh Philip though as you say there have been a range of sanctions already imposed on Russia since the war in Ukraine began so will these actually have a big effect okay two points uh they don’t appear to be having a very big effect right now if you look at GDP

In Russia it’s at 3.1% there’s only a 2.9% unemployment rate uh they’re selling lots of oil and coal to Russia and India so they’re getting round all of that but on the long term those sanctions are biting 300 billion worth of of Euros of Central Bank Reserves are

Blocked uh 70% of Assets in Russian banking system are under sanctions and 20 billion assets of, 1500 people and entities of Frozen so the long-term Prospect is yes they will bite but they’re not biting very hard right now

Britain on Wednesday imposed sanctions on six individuals in charge of the Arctic penal colony where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died last week.

  1. Navalny actually had a voice from prison.
Julian Asange has been silenced in a UK jail for 5 years because he exposed USA war crimes says a lot about UK democracy.
Tucker Carlson already having been placed on the Ukrainian Government’s Myrotvorets KILL LIST says all you need to know about Ukrainian democracy.
Gonzalo Lira a USA citizen was tortured and killed by the Ukrainian government for being critical of Zelensky with little mention from the west.

  2. You guys have acted enough movies since February 2022 and unfortunately all flopped. Sanctioning a country that every natural resources in abundance and in tie with a lot of countries across the world, including the most populated China and India is the most funny plot on earth…it’s obvious the west is now as confused as an headless chicken. None of these would’ve happened if had intervened and negotiated peace; your hegemony and respect would still be alive and Ukraine would still be in control of all these lands taken by Russia…you can’t defeat Russia; it’s obvious.

  3. One thing with some of the western news media that I dont like is the same old tired, boring questions, "but are the sanctions biting,Russia didnt go under yet economically"….the same redudant, boring ill informed questions…sanctions work in the long run, a fraud country like Russia will always find some loopholes here and there..but with time, sanctions will tap the loopholes,be more extensive…and they are necessary..if they didnt do anything harm to Russia, why are they always asking the sanctions to be removed?

  4. Clowns ..so you sanction someone over a natural death, but do not move a finger against the murderers of Gongzalo Lira by the Ukrainian secret police..Shame on England..
