Netherlands select France’s Naval Group for submarines deal • FRANCE 24 English

I am proud and if I’m completely honest also a little relieved that today I can announce who will build our new submarines the shipyard that will build our four new submarines is Naval group The Dutch defense minister is now the only one to be relieved France wants

To get as many prestigious contracts as possible its Naval industry is still recovering from the submarine crisis with Australia when canar cancelled 3 years ago a huge deal over 12 submarines only to turn to the US and British models a move that France described as a backstabbing three international groups

Were in competition for the Dutch contract this is why the government says it shows Naval group they made the best offer the best vote for the best price and a strong Dutch participation no Dutch company can currently build submarines on its own but lawmakers who will make or break the

Deal want to bring as much work as possible to Dutch Industries a group of MPS favors a Swedish Dutch Consortium instead of the French the Dutch military say the French diesel electric model would revamp their Arsenal the weapon systems will be modernized the way we communicate will be modernized basically

Everything we do right now will be done in a much modern better way than we did in the past the military though say that that more than the model itself what’s important is to get started with the building of the submarines to bring the Royal Navy up to speed as soon as possible

The Netherlands picked French defence company Naval Group on Friday to build four submarines for its navy in a deal worth billions of euros that had also been pursued by Swedish and German firms. The decision is a boon for Naval Group, coming three years after it abruptly lost a major contract to build 12 Barracuda submarines for Australia.

  1. I pray Australia. Will come to its senses and ditch the Uk/US sub deal and actually purchase a sub that will work and not be riddled with faults like the. Upholder. Or Trafalgar class with reactor trouser leg problems.

  2. This is all thanks to two world leaders: Putin who helped the world see Russian weapons can’t stand second hand European weapons. Donald Trump’s isolationism that proves US is not a reliable partner. Yay!

  3. The smart in the Netherlands wanted to divide the order in half 50% to NAVAL-France and 50% to Swedish-Saab etc. That would have been smart specially when you need them most. So you don't need to stand in row for repairs, and can send them in times of war, to north or south and most important, you get to use them both, see them both and learn from them both, while preparing your forces working on them, to integrate properly with two nation's armies, while now only one…… Our Dutch army has no insight in strategic, nor in management nor in training, it is complete and utter uneducated people, without experience.

Simple as that. I hope the experience comes from this mistake. We could have made three nations happy,…now only two. Our Dutch Defence Minister never ever had anything to do with army to begin with, so sure, she is only aware of the price. Well…what price does defense need to have? What is the right tactical choices, and what does it take to prepare our forces to work together with other European ones. This has nothing to do with defense at all, it has to do with money. Which is a failure. But by that time our current Defense Minister is long gone, laying her days out in the sun some where. Like always, our Dutch army fails. Fails their people. I am glad they still learn how to place sand bags…

  4. lol… let's see if Fance is not going to upload all the plans of the submarine in internet for everybody to understand how they work and that lead autralians to exclude them!…lol…

  5. The Australian submarine project was floundering, and security was abysmal. China had infiltrated the operations. It's a good thing they found other customers.

  6. It's wasn't a fair competition because naval is a state owned corporation. The Swedish/Dutch option was obviously the best for Dutch industry.

  7. Dutch Walrus class is 67 meters, depth 300 meters.

tkMS 57 meters, depth 200 meters.

Saab 65 meters, depth 200 meters.

Naval 99 meters, depth 350 meters.

Conclusion: Naval has the best submarine!

The German and Swedish submarines seem more suitable for the North and Baltic Seas. The Dutch submarines also have to cross the ocean to the Dutch naval base in Aruba and Curaçao. Because France also has many overseas areas in the Caribbean, perhaps the Dutch and French can work together there.

In addition, the Naval can fire 20 cruise missiles 1,000 km inland and can carry a platoon of 30 Marines on missions.

  8. The reason Australia turned to the U S and the UK , in the huge submarine deal , was a very, very , good reason ; it decided purchase nuclear powered submarines instead of the diesel-electric it was going to buy from France , which France did also make , but which had a vey big drawback in their design that was not suited to the military defense needs of Australia.

  9. Well done to Holland and a good choice. France Germany and South Korea are at the cutting edge of conventional submarine design.
Thales France and Thales Netherlands have a very close bond that will help them going forward.
