‘They have to pay their bills’: Trump accuses Nato allies of not sharing costs of alliance

Now somebody asked a question about NATO before all I can say is this NATO countries have to pay up they have to pay their bills the United States is in for $200 billion and they’re in for $25 billion the economy as you know they their economy when you add them up add

Up the countries uh that make up NATO it’s about the same size as our economy so we’re in for 200 billion they’re in for 25 billion and it’s much more important to them because we have an ocean in between it’s a much more much different thing so the NATO countries

Have to pay up they’re not paying up they’re not paying what they should and they laugh at the stupidity of the United States of America where we have a guy that gives 60 billion dollars every time somebody comes and ask for it we shouldn’t be doing that they’re laughing

At us they think we’re the stupid country because of our leadership

Former president Donald Trump has launched his latest verbal attack on the US’s Nato allies, accusing them of not ‘paying their bills’ in maintaining the military alliance. Speaking to reporters outside court in New York City, where he attended a hearing in his criminal trial on charges regarding hush money payments to an adult film star, the Republican party’s leading nominee said: ‘They’re not paying up, they’re not paying what they should and they laugh at the stupidity of the United States of America, where we have a guy that gives $60bn every time somebody comes and asks for it. We shouldn’t be doing that’.

  1. Ok Trump but if we do pay up tho what do we need your miltary bases in our territories and do we have to folllow what you(US) wants as foreign policy? At that point might as well create a EU army and some miight even get funny ideas about what to do with the EUs foreing policy which you know could even go against USA interests….Be carefull what you ask for

  2. I wonder why people just repeat this incorrect utterance of Trump. It's not that there's a bill to be paid. There was a suggested spending military target. In the US mind it has to be the purchase of weapons and fighter jets, which would benefit American companies. But as Germany sometimes said in the past, they already spent a lot to support the US war in Iraq and Afghanistan and other military interventions. The Germans would like the Americans to put that in the consideration

  3. Trump is 100% right! After the Ukraine war started Europe was celebrating the destruction of Russia and the big victory of NATO every day ( while politicians have been celebrating, the people have been struggling with high energy price (many countries give subsidy to electricity now), food prices etc. )). EU happy! Europe Happy!! NATO Europe happy!!! But everything melted last week … A 5 minutes election speech by Trump has sent tremors in EU Capitals. Every EU leader expressed fear and shock and Mr NATO Man Stoltenberg responded strongly and continues to respond every day now. Obvious he last lost sleep. His free ride in the last two years has come to an abrupt obstruction!

  4. This may come as a surprise to trump but he is not the boss of NATO. If america leaves, NATO will carry on as they are doing right now without America's funding for Ukraine.

  5. Not only is he confused about NATO funding he is confused about Ukraine funding.
He says Europe is as big an economy as USA and should pay as much as USA which he says pays $200b compared to only $20b from Europe….
    WELL>>>TOTAL = USA $71.4b Europe $133.2b
MILITARY = USA $43.9b Europe $45.5b not counting the latest european $55b dollar package.

  6. The 2% is a guidline and not a membership fee.
However the obligation to alliance in the face of invasion of any member is real
and acts most effectively as a deterent if an enemy is convinced that said alliance will hold.
Trump is undermining the effectiveness of NATO and causing more damage than any imaginary unpaid membership fee.

  7. Maybe thinking would be helpful here, rather than simply reacting. Because that is what Trump & Co count upon.

The fact is that NATO was created to push the geopoltical desires of America. It is all very well for some Americans to say "Members must pay 2% of GDP!!" … But that is all about what America wants. America wanted a war in Ukraine, so America can pay for it.

Anyone who thinks that countries such as Germany, France and UK wished to sanction Russia to the extent they have been forced to by America, is clearly ignorant of the facts. Russia energy is not a choice for much of Europe, it is a must have.

In truth I hope that Trump wins and does cause a vast diminishment of NATO … Then the EU can start it's own EU Defence Force and America can just go away and play with itself.

America a dangerous bully. The sooner it loses power, the better for the entire planet.

  8. Europe shouldn't pay NATO anything, NATO is really an extension of America's military expansion into Europe, make America pay for his themselves. Trump is too business minded to figure out what is going on here. Clearly America controls NATO.

  9. If Trump pulled the US out of NATO (which, I don’t think he can even do in the first place), I think he’d be shooting himself in the foot.

Surely disunity in the west would only embolden reactionary powers, like China and Russia? I think, as soon as the US left NATO, it would be the start of the end of the American hegemony, and China would likely take centre stage.

Just my opinion of course, I’m not a geopolitical genius, but I feel like the main strength of democracies lies in their unity.

  10. trump is well know for not paying his bills so this is hypocritical at best but let's be clear , the idea that NATO countries pay 2% of their own GDP to fund their own defense during peace time was a suggestion only . NATO countries don't pay America anything . putin owns trump . trump owns the house republicans and all of this is because putin is losing in Ukraine .

  11. this has always been the problem with NATO, some (most) members are total cheapskates, and will avoid everything to keep their own defense spending to a minimum, forgetting the truth: if you want peace; prepare to fight for it…..

  12. Trump's "not paying bills" narative shows he knows nothing about NATO. No country owes NATO any money because its a treaty, not a business. He's talking about NATO countries being ASKED to spend 2% of GDP on their military and some haven't yet. Iceland, with a population of ½ a million, couldn't afford a military helicopter let alone a single fighter jet. Their official military spending is zero although they do have a coast guard patrolling the north Atlantic. What a great country for Russia to invade and deploy nuclear missiles to if Trump gets his way. Its roughly the same distance to east coast USA as Russia is to the west coast. I wonder if Trump would like that idea. There are other countries like Albania, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Nth Macedonia and Montenegro in a similar position.

Of the other members, Belium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Turkey and the UK have 44 billion dollars in orders of fighter jets from the USA that haven't been delivered yet and that's without support infrastructure. When the equipment is delivered, they will pay their bills. Hungary and Spain also have outstanding fighter jet orders from non-US sources.

Trump isn't someone who should be talking about not paying bills anyway.
