Ghana parliament passes anti-LGBTQ bill • FRANCE 24 English

We can now bring in France 24’s International Affairs editor Philip turo Philip what is the reason for this law okay well um this law I think shows a certain hardening of the stance of uh and a shift to the far right basically in Ghana which has come after calls from

Uh religious groups Muslim groups uh Christian groups and traditional religious groups in Ghana uh following the uh introduction and then closure of the first LGBT Center uh in Ghana a couple of years ago and then rest of more people afterwards uh this new law uh is making it much harder for gay

People to live normal lives in Ghana not that they were able to do that beforehand because already they faced uh three years in jail uh if they were caught uh having uh sex for example together but this has made it much harder now under this new law anybody uh

Who is identified as LGBT or if you know someone who is LGBT and don’t denounce that person to the authorities you can also face a jail term of at least 3 years 2.5 years in jail for funding LGBT activity that’s what to do with associations uh and other organizations

And then 10 years in jail uh if you are part of an LGBT advocacy campaign for children so it’s all quite bad news for uh the gay community uh in Ghana we’ve seen a tightening of the bill already which now looks like it’s going to go through and be signed by the president

Who said that if the people of Ghana want it to be promulgated into law then he will sign it I’ve been to Ghana and I know it’s a very uh deeply religious country but it isn’t the only state in Africa to have such strict anti-gay laws

Where is it safe to be gay on the continent well there is good news and bad news uh the good news is that it’s never been criminalized homosexual activity in 12 African countries uh it’s been decriminalized in 10 others uh South Africa was the first country to allow same-sex marriage and Namibia has

Now declared that same-sex marriage must be considered exactly in the same context as heterosexual marriage so there is some progress but if you look at figures in Africa on this map for example you can still see that uh the death penalty can be upheld uh in uh at

Least four countries five Somalia somal land morania Northern Nigeria and especially in Uganda which is just passed an even more harsh anti-lgbt law last year uh there are also uh Banning of homosexual activity in 31 out of 54 Nations so it is still a very difficult

Continent uh to live your life in Freely if you are from the LGBT community even if there are some cracks of light uh this latest legislation being passed in Ghana uh certainly is pushing things back and there’s been this outcry from the United States from the United Nations from many other countries saying

This law should not be passed now in the hands of the president we’ll see whether he signs it into law he’s got 7 days to do that outcry but we need action thank you very much for that Philip Philip to uh there

Ghana’s parliament voted to pass a controversial bill to severely restrict LGBTQ rights on Wednesday in a move condemned by activists. The bill still has to be validated by the president before becoming law, which observers believe is unlikely before a general election in December. FRANCE 24’s International Affairs Editor Philip Turle tells us more.

  1. Shame on South Africa and Namibia. You need to hold the line fam. You're not a Euro colony anymore so you need to drop the European mindset. SMDH.

  2. Before you impose LGBTQ on us make sure the whole America and Europe also practice it …i.mean all of them..if your parents were practicing such nonsense..will they have giving birth to you..the whole African continent has their traditions abd and culture to protect..you criminalize polygamy..trying as mush as you can to force LGBTQ on us..is that all you can do..Africa problems is far far higher than LGBTQ..instead of helping Africa with food and stuff..you're here telling us to do what the Bible and the Quran is against..

  3. If you put gay people in one country their country will be short lived because they population will diminish by 100 years. So their “community “ is heavily dependent on heterosexual individuals and turning them into lgpt. Very interesting indeed.

  4. And so should you, wherever you are. No hate, just rational thinking. It will ruin your kids, your country, yourself in the end. Patriarchal society is what got us here and I would like to carry on a little more, not to finish it suddenly cause of some mental's feelings

  5. As an American, I stand with Ghana. It's nice to see some countries are still sane and are pushing back against lunacy and degeneracy.
