A view from Rochdale: ‘Democracy has gone out of the window’

Cry watch cry rale is right now facing a historical election we’re making a film with Community reporters in R we making a film about his politic you talk to us for a minute you voted elction who are you going to vote for who am I going to vote for yeah are

You from R I’m from rale man where you work and so this I work for a community reporting team yeah in rdale we’re based in rdale this documentary that we made it’s going to be on the guardian website you know the Guardian Newspaper well obviously it’s a a major shock that labor are out because labor always tend to win Rochdale I’m not going to lie I’m quite happy about that fact because I don’t think labor have done Rochdale any good over the last God knows how long so it’s thrown everything

Up in the air so that’s quite exciting I suppose as far as that’s concerned it’s just a comedy Now isn’t it with what’s happened and then we’ve got um Mr Galloway opportunist he’s just wanting to use roxdale for his own ends would you vote for you to vote oh

It’ be probably labor W it labor it’s just one of those you know we could get rid of with all these people sleeping we have people sleeping in cars and stuff we getting them somewhere to stay getting the homeless off the road you see we’re in the center of town so we

See it all all the time when shops are shutting down it’s a bit of a loss in it for instance a McDonald’s which is it’s who def McDonald’s Had leave Rockdale and stuff like that you know this is dis Grace 20 years ago I haven’t

Shopped in rdale and I live in it and I hav’t shopped in rdale for years are you waving cuz you want to talk to us I’m ay so people always say oh you’ve got it so easy like cuz this wasn’t around when we were older and all that but you guys can

Get a mortgage how hard it is for us to get a mortgage like I’ll tell you the problems we have as young people now we can get on the council hous in list because there’s so many people on there you know I’ve got an autistic daughter I don’t see anybody talking about

Disabilities or what we can do I’m not voting for ages cuz none of them’s kind of community Leed I want someone in rdale community lead and who can say right I’ve done this I I know R like the back of me hand people are not educated in politics you’re in school you’re not

Getting educated in these things so you’re then turned 18 you’re expected to vote and you’re not educated in what’s what conservative labor independent that’s a massive fail on the whole country politics absolute Madness food prices go up W go down high class people they’re happy up there arly in

Their Armory toes doing whatever they’re doing the election should be can should Beed and start on you think we should do it again we should just scrap it people that want to vote the way they want to vote can make that vote the vot be taken away from them so democracy’s

Gone out the window and got out do you know there’s an election going on in rdale I’ve just moved to rdale all right okay so what do you think about all this that’s happening now all this pava uh what you mean political stuff and stuff like that yeah

Yeah uh it’s not really do my own thing mate you know what I mean to be honest on this milkstone road labor party gone all the way our community going to vote for Gallow so do you think he cares about rdale yeah yeah he’s caring about rdale the he’s promising everyone promising some

Fulfill some not fulfill but what he’s saying that people going to this time give him a chance CH change of face and change of party is the time roale needed have a nice day

The Guardian was working with a community reporting team called the Elephant’s Trail in Rochdale on a series about their town when a byelection was called. The contest quickly plunged into chaos after the Labour party and the Green party withdrew support for their candidates and the canvassing was dominated by smaller parties. But how did this affect the voters? The team hit the streets and found evidence of apathy, concerns about homelessness and a desire for politicians who are committed to changing their community for the better.

  1. You invited the third world, now you have the third world. At least you are experiencing that cultural relativism is a lie first hand and that these people you are importing seek to oppose democracy, your way of life and freedom.

  2. This isnt about Galloway getting in. The real thing the 'establishment' is afraid of is a unknown indepedent got over 20% of the vote. They are terrified of a huge wave of independents taking up seats in Westminster. The two party system they control would be in tatters. Bring it on!

  3. They have lowered the bar for mental disorder so much that anyone can say they have an autistic child, so no it doesnt help get a council house. How about you and the babies father get a job and buy your own home with a 1% down payment mortgage. Its just "give me, give me, I'm entitled to … give me", rather than "if I work hard I can afford what I need".

  4. Interesting attitude to homelessness😢. How it effects the aesthetics of the man's business front😂. Well done mate nothing like humanitarian concern is there? Maybe Rochdale deserves being in the gutter if that's the prevailing attitude. Maybe that's why it's been in the gutter for decades already 🤔

  5. It makes me sick the lack of pride and respect my countries own government has for its people, it's towns, cities and villages. Just an absolute disgrace what has happened to great Britain.

  6. The Guardian has been singing the praises of the very policies that have destroyed cities like this. Now it demographically backfires and they turn up with 'Oooh, democracy has gone out the window'.

How you people sleep at night is beyond me.

  7. no more labour no more toris they both corrupt. time for independent mps who fight for the people and not on israel paycheck
