Romania and Bulgaria join Europe’s Schengen travel zone • FRANCE 24 English

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union. After years of negotiations to join the so-called Schengen area, there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea. Land border checks will remain in place, however, due to opposition primarily from Austria, which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.

  1. This is an outrage. Austria should be kicked out of the EU and Romania and Bulgaria should be allowed in Schengen. This "air Schengen" is an insult.

  2. After Bulgarians slowed down the control of Austrians trucks they very fast understand that cooperation is the best way 😁

  3. They threw a bone. Here in eastern Hungary it's still taking forever to cross. There are ethnic Hungarians from Romania who chose to move to Hungary whilst continuing to work in Romania after they joined in 2007, but the hopes of quick and free movement is still but a dream. The crossing between Csenger and Satu Mare is known to be a nightmare for example. Some people elect to own 2 cars, one on the Hungarian one on the Romanian side so they can cross on foot instead as that's slightly faster.

  4. "largest area of free movement in the world", well if you subtract the Russian(i know most of you won't include them in your "free movement" so you lose their land area in calculation) portion of the European continent ya'll fall behind the United States so no, you lose that statement!

  5. Austria keeps Romania hostage because of their internal affairs. We are losing alot of money because of not having acces to the Schengen that matters. Bullies. They should be kicked out of EU and Schengen

  6. As an Austrian I feel ashamed of what our government – in fact it is one party, the ÖVP, the conservatives who fear to loose votes to the right wing FPÖ in the upcoming elections – is doing here.

And I´m pessimistic that anything will get better after the elections because voters will likely turn to the xenophobic right anyways. 😞

  7. After so many years in which Romania and Bulgaria were taxed in the same way as the EU member countries now this Represents one of the biggest humiliations that the Romanian and Bulgarian people have to endure from the European Union ! Schengen should shove this "gift " up its ….

  8. The enlargement of the European Union will take place in stages, first Montenegro and Serbia will join the European Union in 2025, then after 2025, in 2026 or/2027 Albania, Macedonia, then Bośnia and Herzegovina , and after 2028 Mołdova, by 2028/2029 Ukraine will join Georgia and, by 2030, secular and law-abiding Turkey after the change of power in 2028 in parliamentary and presidential elections after 2030 the latest enlargement of the European Union to include democratic and free Bełarus and Armenia and perhaps in the future Azerbaijan

  9. This is not true, this is only for fights and naval travels, meaning less than 10%, where the queues are not a problem, but the road travel is not in Schengen, therefore long waiting lines.
All this because of Austria 🙁

  10. Austria should be ashamed of this! Romania and Bulgaria are prepared to be Schengen members and there are no excuses to keep them outside any longer.

  11. The Ruzzian lovers from Austria, Hungary and Slovakia are welcome part of the Shengen while true supporters of Ukraine from Romania and Bulgaria aren't. 😂😂😂😂😂 One big joke.

  12. Who the hell is Austria to block? I thought immigration – if that is the reason, and not racism, was an EU wide issue? How convenient of Austria when it's surrounded by Schengen countries – but, somethings never change do they Austria?

  13. Schengen. de grote vergissing. Open borders are not for civilized people only….

Open grenzen. Een getuigenis van een ongekende naïviteit.

  14. We're not in schengen, we're placed xenophobicly in a separate semi-schengen group by Austria. This isn't doing anything buy creating more euroscepticism over here.
