Roman banquet hall frescoes unearthered in Pompeii • FRANCE 24 English

the latest treasure to be Unearthed in
Pompei a banquet hall 15 M long and 6 M
wide with mosaics on the floor and small
frescos on the walls the paintings are
remarkably well preserved lanterns used
during Banquets would make them appear
to come to
life the walls were painted black to
prevent the smoke from the old lamps
from spoiling
them the flickering light from the lamps
gave the impression that the images on
the walls were
moving the artworks are said to depict
figures from Greek mythology here we see
Helen of Troy meeting Paris Prince of
Troy and this image is said to depict
Apollo attempting to seduce the Trojan
Priestess
Cassandra and it was an occasion to talk
about love about the
couple but also of the bigger story that
involves these two that are the cause
or maybe just the pretext for the Trojan
War Pompei is an open air museum the
volcanic ash released by Mount Vesuvius

A black-walled banqueting hall decorated with scenes from Greek mythology, where ancient Romans feasted by candlelight, has been unearthed in Pompeii, the archaeological park said Thursday. The exceptionally well-preserved frescoes show the god Apollo attempting to seduce Trojan priestess Cassandra, and Helen of Troy meeting Paris, an encounter which would lead to war.
