On the ground: Flash floods, landslide kill at least 45 in Kenya • FRANCE 24 English
in recent weeks Nairobi has been
battered by heavy rains which have left
a trail of Destruction and suffering
yesterday I was in one of Kenya one of
nairobi’s poorest neighborhoods of
Matari where thousands of people have
been displaced from their homes um it’s
one of nairobi’s informal settlements
which have been uh the worst hit by
these heavy rains because of their poor
and blocked Drainage Systems so when I
was there yesterday the river was
completely overflowing um many people
had been displaced from their homes
which had been completely destroyed by
the floods um a lot of them were
expressing their anger over the
government’s slow response to the heavy
rains and to the destruction I ended up
going to a school where many of them are
living at the moment as temporary
housing but they have no idea where
they’re going to go next they don’t know
what their next steps are and they have
lost most of their belongings and a lot
of them had lost um some of their loved
ones as well in those floods elsewhere
in the city the destruction is visible
everywhere roads have been destroyed
Bridges have been destroyed homes have
been destroyed and also many trees have
been uprooted a lot of those trees have
fallen on electricity lines which has
caused blackouts in many parts of the
city
Flash floods and a landslide in central Kenya killed at least 45 people and injured over 110 others on Monday as floodwaters swept away houses and cars in the town of Mai Mahiu, the government said. The deaths have brought the overall toll across Kenya from heavy rains and flooding since last month to over 140. More than 185,000 people have been displaced. In the capital Nairobi alone, close to 10,000 people have had to leave their homes. FRANCE 24’s Olivia Bizot reports from Nairobi, Kenya.
