Polls open in England for key local elections with Conservatives facing heavy losses • FRANCE 24

today in fact there is a real test ahead
of the UK general election to come today
there are crucial local elections in the
UK which Britain’s ruling conservative
party is expected to suffer heavy losses
the elections then likely to increase
pressure on rushi sunak the poll then is
the last major electoral test before
that supposed general election that sux
party in power since 2010 seems destined
to lose to the labor opposition well
let’s hear from a correspondent in

Pavo uh today’s local elections have
been penell in as a day of peril uh for
months now and really uh as possibly
bringing a lot of political Tory
turbulence possibly even a leadership
challenge so the Tory party we know has
plunged in the polls after going through
two prime ministerial Falls that of
Boris Johnson and Then followed very
briefly we all Remember by Liz truss and
it is now the labor party uh and K stama
uh who are hoping to translate their
consistent opinion po leads uh into
actual votes so uh concretely the voters
will choose today London assembly
members and the next mayor of London
sadik Khan is going up for a third term
his main rival is the conservative Susan
Hall they are almost neck and neck now
uh outside the British capital in nine
Metro areas across England voters will
elect 10 Mayors also there’ll be a
byelection uh that will be held uh
that’s the only one being h held today
and that will be in Blackpool South as
the uh
conservative MP there Scott Benton um
actually had to resign because of a
lobbying Scandal so uh voters in England
will elect 37 police and crime
Commissioners now uh if indeed Andy
Street uh and Ben Hoin uh in mayor
elections were to be beaten then that
would really be to conservatives that
would be extra pressure on Rishi sunak
so a day of danger
uh and we’ll see as the results trickle
in vote ID required now that came in
last year 22 ways of proving your
identity if you go in person to polling
stations

Britain’s ruling Conservative party is expected to suffer heavy losses in crunch local elections this week that are likely to increase pressure on beleaguered Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The polls are the last major electoral test before a general election that Sunak’s party, in power since 2010, seems destined to lose to the Labour opposition.
