now rescue efforts are continuing in Brazil as the south of the country grapples with days of heavy rains that have killed at least 31 people 60 remain missing and 15,000 have been forced to leave their homes since the storms began on Saturday the extreme weather has been caused by a rare combination of hotter than average temperatures high humidity and strong winds well for more on this we can speak to our BBC Brazil reporter Daniel Gallas So Daniel just bring us up to date with those rescue efforts in southern Brazil yes well there’s still 60 people missing and 32 dead so uh this is likely to be the worst uh flood incident in in the number of deaths uh registered in that area the state Governor already said that this is the worst flooding that happened in that area half a million people are without water or electricity and there are a lot of people that haven’t been able to be in touch uh with the outside world so they’re locked in the these cities uh because they have no way of leaving the cities the bridges have collapsed uh the rivers have flooded the roads have flooded as well so they’re not able to leave these areas of risk uh the government is trying to come in with lots of helicopters and rescue people and establish Communications so it’s it’s pretty much the worst uh flood that this uh state which is has about 10 million people has ever seen in history and Daniel also worrying reports of a dam bursting what effect has is had on the area yeah this is just one more incident uh it wasn’t a big Dam and it also it was just part of it that burst but the the big issue is that uh dams are not containing the water that are coming down from the rivers anymore and the cities that are built alongside Rivers the rivers are coming up even in the capital city that is happening and we know that in the next few hours this should be the highest level that uh some of the r have reached since the 1940s so the problem isn’t just the Dam’s bursting but also that the rain is not expected to to to drop there’s still more rain to come in the next 24 to 48 hours and Daniel viewers can see these incredible pictures of rescue efforts a couple or two people on a roof who are being rescued how is the government responding well the government’s uh line of response first there are different governments here there city state and federal government so they are trying to work together uh the state government has been asking for more helicopters which seem to be the big issue at the moment and Brazil is sending the federal government is sending some Aid uh the after that there is the issue of uh you know finding the people who are disappeared and that will take a lot of government uh help as well like I said the big problem now is the isolation of these cities people can’t privately do things on their own because they need the roads they need the infrastructure that simply isn’t there

A hydroelectric dam has collapsed in southern Brazil after days of heavy rain that triggered massive flooding, killing more than 30 people.

Another 60 people are missing in Rio Grande do Sul state, officials said.

About 15,000 residents have fled their homes since Saturday. At least 500,000 people are without power and clean water across the state.

The extreme weather has been caused by a rare combination of hotter than average temperatures, high humidity and strong winds.

  2. This seems a few dams that have burst in the last few years and looks an increasing threat to communities. This is bad enough that communities and power stations are impacted but also farmland and smelting of ores.
    The resilience of our dams and water supply needs urgent assessment and investment.

  12. As in East Texas, the flooding is due to human overpopulation and related cow, pig, sheep and other farm animal population growth. Brazil is now a giant slum simply because people would not or could not have two children or fewer.

I'm from there and this shit is crazy, the biggest and most intense amount of flooding I've seen in my life and I've seen more than a handful that brought entire communities to the ground, this is state wide, so many cities and towns have been covered in water or partially damaged, my brother fathers is still missing and is within one of the areas cut off by the flooding. The coast of the capital had to be evacuated. It's not hurricane winds of destruction but torrential rain that doesn't stop and overflows rivers and large lakes flooding nearby towns and cities, most of them are near bodies of water, so many are affected. Given the wide scale and magnitude of the issue, it is likely it'll take a lot more effort to fix most of the damage and rescue those in need than it would in any prior natural flooding I have ever seen in the region. Brazil is very warm up north and less in the middle, but the south is highly temperate and has both high heat summers and cold winters which causes a LOT of rain to pour during raining season, but this is beyond anything. I hope to God that people who need help can get it before it's too late.

  21. It going to get worse. Can i just say now, to the god botherers, its not revenge or wrath, its incompetence and greed from humans caused this. Be better humans, its quite simple.
