Russia’s air attack on Ukraine: Critical energy infrastructure is damaged

the Ukrainian President Vladimir zalinski says that Russia has seriously damaged critical energy infrastructure in an overnight Air [Music] Attack more than 50 missiles and 20 drones were launched leaving smoke hanging over the capital keev we have John Holan who’s joining us from ke to tell us what more you’re learning John about what happened overnight yeah the attack happened about 4:30 in the morning and there was some damage in residential areas one residential uh building damage several houses just in the KE region and two people injured but the main focus of the attack seemed to be on Ukraine’s energy grid and particularly its firmo energy plants the company dtec said that three of its Thermo energy plants have been seriously damaged and this isn’t anything new the company said that in the last month and a half they faced five serious attacks of them and they’ve said in the past that 80% of their generating capabilities in their thermoelectric plants have been damaged so this is a real concerted attack by Russia not just now but in recent weeks to really knock out the Ukrainian energy grid overall John what’s the situation like on the ground that Ukraine’s on the back foot and you see that in its second second major city H which is enduring almost daily aerial strikes on it you also see it on the front line uh where Ukraine’s um chief commander has said that Russia’s attacking at several different points and at some of those points it is inching forwards and managing to gain an advantage what that’s linked to as well is the lack of Manpower for Ukraine but also its lack of Weaponry uh it’s said to our teams in recent weeks uh that for every shell that it fires for example six or seven shells are coming back from the Russian side uh there’s a pledges of military assistance from the United States that’s now approved the $61 billion package and also from Ukraine’s allies in Europe but what Ukraine and also the head of NATO that was here recently has said is that that’s arriving too slowly for this country and what it means is that there’s a window for Russia and Russian forces to try and press home its advantage while those weapons arrive so it’s expected that they’re going to continue to do that for the rest of May and perhaps even into June okay thank you John hullman thanks for that update from Keys make sure to subscribe to our channel to get the latest news from Al jaaz
