Ukraine repels surprise Russian attack in Kharkiv region | BBC News

hello and welcome to verified live we start this hour in Ukraine because President zelinski says a fierce battle is underway in the HEV region after Russia launched a surprise attack small groups of troops with armored vehicles pushed through the front lines military sources say Advanced about a kilometer before being pushed back there are reports of sustained Russian shelling Ukraine’s defense Ministry says reinforment reinforcements have been sent to to the region here’s president seni Russia started a new wave of offensive actions in the hierar region Ukrainian forces met them there with brigades and artillery fire it’s important to understand that they can increase and bring more forces in this direction it is a fact let’s go straight to ke and our Ukraine correspondent James W house and James tell us more because as I were saying there this appears to have taken Ukraine by surprise well I think keev would disagree with that I mean what they are saying Matthew is that we were anticipating an operation such as this but they are nevertheless having to move Reserve troops into this part of the northeastern har region and it’s really centering it seems around the town of V Chans where 3,000 people live and are currently being evacuated it has been long been anticipated for the past few weeks that Russia is going to try and mount some kind of offensive uh in this area around 35,000 troops are thought to have gathered across the border inside Russia I think we are someway short of that um but Moscow has been pretty upfront about its desire to establish a so-called buffer zone to try and increase the gap between their respective troops because Ukrainian forces have increasingly been shelling uh the Russian region of belgaro to the slight nervousness of some Western allies so clearly Russia wants to increase that Gap but of course fighting is about shaping as well and if you have these Russian forces drawing Ukrainian troops and trying to make further incursions and if they were to deploy those troops further behind then it could amount to something more but I don’t think many in Ukrainian or Western circles are expecting the city of har itself the country’s second biggest city to fall as whether As Cities like Sumi simply because of the number of Russian troops we’re talking about and the losses that Russia as well as Ukraine have sustained so far James just briefly where are we when it comes to weapons we know that finally that deadlock in Washington was broken recently but where are we when it comes to Ukraine actually defending itself it’s a bit murky at the moment we know some of that Western help is arriving uh we don’t know what one would imagine it would be mostly artillery shells because the Americans had stock piles in Europe itself but there this unlocking of Western Aid won’t be realized immediately and even once it all arrives so those medium range missiles those air defense systems to counter Russian air superiority Ukraine’s goal for now is to Simply stabilize the front line James W house there in ke thanks very much

“Russia has launched a new wave of counteroffensive operations in the Kharkiv sector,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukrainian commanders have been expecting a summer offensive for some time, but officials are adamant Russia does not have the resources to do so.

The defence ministry in Kyiv said “there was an attempt by the enemy to break through our defensive line under the cover of armoured vehicles. As of now, these attacks have been repulsed, fighting of varying intensity continues.”

The return of heavy fighting in the north-east further illustrates Russia’s growing confidence and ambition.

  1. Wake up!!! How can Zelensky win the war being a beggar? He has no money, no ammunition, no young conscripts, no training and is losing support in Ukraine.
Russia military is more than 10x the size size of Ukraine. Its military complexes are rejuvenated. Increase ammunition continue to flow into frontier.

  2. False Russians are conducting recon enforce, this is only the beginning of the end Ukraine can't win while they're young men are leaving the country

  3. Why lie? It was not a surprise attack. Everyone but the BBC – knew it was coming. Now the BBC, only after Russia switched from defence to offence, and has gained ground, has switched from the propaganda that Ukraine, although no longer advancing, is "repealing."

"Officials are adamant Russia does not have the resources," as those very same "officials" have admitted on BBC that Ukraine does not has the manpower!

Another pure propaganda pro-war article. The same as previously told about why we had to fight the losing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And this time is of course different! Not at all!!!

  4. well its not anything surprising. Known for a long time that there propably will be an offensive in the general region. So ukraine has reserve in the area. But they can only commit this reserve as soon as they know where exactly russia attacks. Or they would need much more troops to defend (Like if there are 5 possible attack locations and russia has 100k men. Then ukriane would need 500k men to defend all 5) Or they defend all 5 lightly and have the main force in reserve, which then goes to where russia attacked. And it seems thats what happened. Russia made some progress, ukraine will reinforce, front lines will stabilize. Russia gains little by that. A village or two wont decide the war

  5. Nothing has been repelled atm.
Ukraine struggles so stop even with small attacks by drg units. They even used old images just to show they "repelled" their attack. There are Russians in 12 settlements in Kharkov.

  6. But the real question is, can the BBC identify their reporter in Ukraine as a Male or Female? And if there’s any difference between genders of the gentleman in the studio? 😂

  7. There are so many conflicting stories on Youtube. Why can't you wait until something actually happens before reporting that it has happened?

  8. we dont need to know what has arrived..finally doing a good job keep this information out of the hands of the media. we know how long it takes. And after that timeframe it has been arriving every single day

  9. The Russian Armed Forces created a bridgehead up to 10 km wide and up to 5 km deep without any problems.

At night, 4-5 battalions crossed the border and entered 4 villages.

Strelcha, Krasnoye, Pylnoye, Borisovka are in the gray zone, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have left a number of fortified areas and are retreating into the depths of the defense, several independent military correspondents report this.

  10. >Puti talks about creating dmz after recent attacks on civilians and attempts to breach the border
    >"Surprise attack"
