Why is the uncanny valley so unsettling? | QI – BBC

what’s the most unsettling thing that you can think of un uncanny valley uncanny valley exactly where we are heading what can you tell me about uncanny Valle The Uncanny Valley is like when dos look too real so I think if a do doesn’t look like a do it’s creepy and you can your brain goes that’s not really a do that’s so basically when robots begin to look more humanlike so when they’ve got arms and legs and their face and so on for a while we empathize with the more but then when they reach a stage where they’re sort of almost um but not quite human we’re suddenly repulsed by weep yeah so there was a Japanese roboticist called Masahiro Mori in 1970 and he dubbed it bkim notani and it means the valley of eeriness or exactly what you said The Uncanny Valley so you can see here look you can see a robot and we quite like it and then it becomes a bit more human and then we think it’s rather sort of marvelous and then there’s just a moment when it’s just a bit too creepy and then we don’t like it at all but if we could make it look really human then we would start like it again is that why I’m always settled when never I work where them G make you’re quite right have you seen a program called is it cake oh yes yes oh yeah they have a thing like a car tire and then they have a cake that looks like a car tire which one’s a cake and you have to get gu from a distance yeah and the idea is that we sometimes we find it a bit repulsive because mainly we’re not supposed to eat things um that they represent so they represent toilet paper or dogs or or whatever and there is a thing about us being repulsed uh by an object that’s that’s fine isn’t it that’s that’s not hit The Uncanny valy no wait a minute so was sh is the thing about us being repulsed by certain things if you brought a brand new toilet brush into the kitchen never been used and you suddenly started stirring the soup with it right even though it’s never been used it’s just a piece of plastic it’s absolutely fine that’s why people don’t like sex toys in the dishwasher in Sharing in a flat share they get a bit funny about

  2. Thought, could there have once been a evolutionary advantage to being scared of something that looked almost human, but wasn't?

  3. I know I’m not alone here but I’ve never experienced the uncanny valley feeling. 🤷‍♂️ In addition, the originator of the term saw it as more of a thought experiment than a scientific hypothesis.

And while I don’t doubt that some human-like things creep out some people there’s no consistent pattern about what those things look like. For example, I have read that rag and Barbie dolls give some people the uncanny valley feeling. I don’t doubt that they feel that way but the fact that millions of children play with those dolls shows that it can’t be universal.
