France sees boom in second-hand clothing shops • FRANCE 24 English
[Music] this Paris thrift store opened less than a year ago A New Concept for this student this is my second time I had no idea these places existed before these days almost half of French buyers go to secondhand Outlets first mostly for the low prices I found a jean dress for a top for another three I could never get them that cheap and new in France the thrifted clothing Market grew 140% in 2 years globally it now stands at some 34 billion EUR an inexpensive alternative to a climate culprit that’s especially popular among young people long gone are the days when thrifting meant sifting through heaps or bins here are the sweatshirts with t-shirts and sweatpants further down so everything’s highly organized well organized well we do our best but yes it’s easy to look through like a traditional store you shouldn’t be able to tell that you’re in a thrift shop almost all of the secondhand clothing you can buy in France passes through this Depot every week 40 metric tons of a Peril are delivered here erve shardel is looking for steals for his soon to open store in LEL in the west of France these bundles were sorted around the world this one must come from Japan clothes are made everywhere you can’t just have them shipped from Britany and France it’s a global business a global business with far-reaching consequences some of the biggest open air secondhand clothing markets are in Africa like this one in senagal with the rise of fast fashion over the last 30 years the quality of clothing has gone down and up to 40% of what ends up here is deemed useless and incinerated over supp is also stifling local textile Industries Transportation costs are another problem as are high labor costs to recondition clothing before resale put together these considerations mean the secondhand apparel industry loses money despite its colossal size even online Global industry leader vented has posted a net loss every year since 2017 the only subgroup showing profits is the luxury resale sector in this Parisian store pre-loved designer clothes are sold 25 to 95 a pop at least I can get a good deal here on one or two pieces I’d never buy in a normal store I think it’s a good thing I bought an article worth €4,000 I could never have afforded that how much was it 95 this former English teacher goes to yard sales and secondhand markets and makes a curated selection luxury is often highly unaffordable and I wanted to undercut the market people want a wider range of secondhand Goods they want luxury for a fraction of the price there’s no stopping the trend that professionals say could balloon to weigh more than the entire fast fashion sector by 2028
With inflation taking a toll on people’s finances and amid a growing sense of responsibility towards the climate, second-hand shops are booming across the globe. In France, around 10 percent of clothes each year are now resold, and thrift stores are attracting a wider audience. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24’s Shona Bhattacharyya.

My aunt used to be a volunteer at a charity store here in England. It was situated next to a fairly wealthy area and received lots of high-end donations.
After two days, staff at the shop were allowed to buy items, which gave the general public the chance to get the bargains. My aunt bought all of her skirts, blouses, jumpers, and coats from the shop, and they were all designer goods. They cost her a small amount of money plus the cost of dry cleaning.
The shop looked like those in the video. My aunt used to put items on one side in order to be able to create a themed window display. Once, the theme was a wedding. My aunt had had the display uncovered for about an hour when a young woman walked in and checked the sizes. She bought everything! There was a wedding dress, shoes, and veil; three bridesmaid's dresses and shoes; a three piece suit for the groom; and a dress, coat, hat, handbag, and shoes for the bride's mother. She paid less than £100 for the whole purchase. She brought the wedding photos to show my aunt. Apparently, they all looked amazing, and no one suspected that they had not spent thousands.
This was over 30 years ago. Although some charity shops here are not well planned, many are so good that it is not obvious you are in a charity shop. When my friend had his first flat, he took me to a charity furniture shop, and it was hard to believe that it was not a normal commercial shop until I looked at the prices.
Nice stores well organized. .💪
All money went to Ukraine so no money for clothes
I would not want to wear someone else's old smelly clothes
Robust network of second hand clothing shop.?😂😂 May be florence villeminot can add that to intricacies of French life segment. 😅
My country doesn’t have a lot of them, we use vinted instead , although most still buy new.
I love this. I use to shop at vintage stores
Wish we had this is the US!
Here in Italy…even vintage it’s expensive. One store owner was asking for 2,000 euros for a 50 yrs old Gucci. I thought I could keep saving and have the Boutique experience while buying new but maybe a smaller bag.
Even in high end stores- you can count on someone else having had those clothes on. Soap an water and tons of money saved!!
In South Africa we have outlets for Hospice! We can buy good quality for a good price!
