Ukraine says Russian troops advancing on front line in Kharkiv

the war in Ukraine is back in our news this morning Ukraine says its troops are locked in intense battles with advancing Russian soldiers in the northeastern Ukrainian region of har and there are fears that fighting could spread let’s bring in Julia Chapman who’s on the story for us this morning out of London how extensive are the gains Russia is making on this new front Julia good morning well Russia says that it has uh claimed nine Villages along the border region over the weekend since it began this incursion on Friday and Ukraine’s military has admitted that Moscow has seen some tactical successes in the small city of V Chans where overnight in his nightly address Vladimir zinsky the Ukrainian president said uh Ukrainian forces were coming under constant fire in the outskirts where the situation there remains very difficult so certainly an opening up of a new front in this War uh but officials in Ukraine have told the public uh not to panic they say that reinforcements are being sent in nevertheless they have evacuated more than 5,000 people from these border Villages along the border with Russia and this certainly does Mark the most significant incursion into this region since the early phases of the war so Julia what is behind the fact that again harke is the renewed Focus for Russia and what are they tell us about Ukraine’s fighting ability at this point in the war well there are certainly questions being raised as to how this has been possible we saw one disgruntled Ukrainian Soldier take to social media arguing that Russians were able to just walk in saying that the first line of fortifications Simply didn’t exist uh one military advisor to the uh the ministry of Defense Yuri sack said this morning that because of constant bombardments uh from from Russia against these Villages it simply wasn’t possible to build defensive lines the Region’s Governor has argued that there is also a cause of for this because of the delays to Western Aid so certainly a lot of questions being asked but the major concern now tactically for the ukrainians is the proximity of Russian forces to the city of harke Ukraine’s second largest city with a pre-war population of 1.5 million people and as the Russians approach the fear is that they could reach artillery distance from this city making it much harder to repel attack than it has been so far Julia thank you very much Julia chapen this morning
