Prince William flies Apache gunship after King Charles makes him chief of Harry’s old Army unit

the king and Prince William put on a display of royal family Father and Son togetherness today such displays of unity in contrast have been severely lacking between the king and his Wayward Son Prince Harry the king landed by Chopper to hold a ceremony on an airst strip in Hampshire where he handed over the Cel seat of the Army Air after 31 years to William William is an accomplished helicopter pilot he served as a royal Navy search and rescue pilot and also flew with the East Anglia Ambulance Service and still flies as much as he can privately in a touching moment the king dutifully marched across the runway to the control tower shook his proud son’s hand and handed over the coveted role while standing in front of an Apache helicopter Williams first Duty as colonel-in-chief was of course to climb on board the helicopter and take to the skies joining air crew on a capability flight why is this so important well not only do these ceremonial roles need to be filled by a member of the royal family but this is a soft way of sending a powerful message to Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex flew the exact type of Apache helicopter while seeing active duty in Afghanistan if he and Megan hadn’t stepped down as working Royals this coveted role would more than likely have been his so this Handover while ceremonial has huge symbolism Charles of course was too busy to meet Harry last week because he had a pack diary carrying out his constitutional role of being the king and it comes as Harry and Megan finished their Almost Royal Jaun to Nigeria which had all the Hallmarks of a traditional Royal tour only it wasn’t one so while Harry some would say is playing at being a royal again on the world stage the king and is to the throne put on a show of royal family unity and friendship which is much needed right now I did just want to say what a great joy it is to be with you even briefly on this occasion uh but also tend with great SBS after 32 years of of knowing you all and admiring all your many activities and your achievements throughout the time that I been lucky enough to be K ch the Army Air and of course all that time on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan I I watched with um again immense admiration for what you did and managed to to to do out there and of course with this remarkable Apache here um I remember I think I probably was taken out at one of these words all those years ago and and I shall never forget it nor will I forget the fact that when I first became K Chief you still had quite a few fixed me aircraft one at in which I flew in uh along with some rather ancient helicopters so all I can say is that having had the pleasure of knowing you for so long I do hope you will go from strength to strength in the future uh with the r Wells as your you colonel in Chief the great thing is he’s a very good pilot indeed so that’s encouraging so there’s look out to yourselves and and and I I count how proud it has made me to being involved with you all this time thank that it’s not always uh done in a ceremony that you hand over a position like colonel in Chief this can just be done very quietly if looking at it from Prince Harry’s point of view I would think it would definitely be perceived as a snub because he was over here he tells us or his office tells us that he wasn’t going to have a meeting with the king the king of course never says anything quite rightly um but then to have this ceremony a few days later which was basically the the regiment in which he himself had served cuz he was flying Apache helicopters around I can see he would perceive that as a snub I don’t think that that’s the sort of thing that the king and Prince William do however and so I I prefer to look at it as a much more positive step in that the king is is is giving him this position and of course he couldn’t have given it to Prince Harry because Prince Harry is not a working and serving member of the royal family so given that they need a colonel in Chief and given that Prince William was chosen in that respect it’s not a SN Prince Harry obviously tells us that he’s much happier now and um that he wasn’t happy doing his duties but I strayed across a photograph of him the other day in a magazine I thought goodness he looks happy and then it was dated 2015 which of course is Prem Megan Markle and I think he was because I think people are on the whole happy when they are doing a good job on behalf of the nation rather than on behalf of themselves if I can put it like that and so I think I think he was doing an extremely good job before he was very popular um he seemed to have found his his niche in life he was doing good good work in the Commonwealth and the overseas territories as well which appeared to interest him very much and they loved him over there I saw him in in um in uh in Antiga and I can vouch for how popular he was and so yes I think he was much a much happier person and as I say I think the reason for that is that he was contributing something for the general good good what um disturbs me about that is that of course the Queen the late Queen did give um Harry and Megan the entire Commonwealth to um you know to to be responsible for and they were both individually even before they met committed to the Commonwealth he for obvious reasons was going out and about representing his grandmother but she too had been out in those African countries and uh working on with sort of United Nations and so forth and doing charitable endeav so it just seemed to be a wonderful natural fit um where this tour is slightly confusing to me at any rate is um you know it isn’t it isn’t a royal tour it wasn’t done on behalf of um Great Britain or um or the United Kingdom um it I’m not quite sure exactly what it was doing it looked it looked a very happy tour and they people out in Nigeria seem very pleased to see them and that I guess must be a good thing I think something a bit odd about it yes because I’ve always thought that the most successful members of the royal family are those who are working uh to uh support the Monarch uh in his in his duties because the king cannot do everything that he’s asked to do and so they go out and do it on his behalf when they’re doing it on their own behalf there’s a sense of competition with the Monarch and that’s what I find rather difficult to get my head round to be honest King Charles uh does like being out and about and we have seen him out and about a little bit recently certainly I saw him on Easter day and he looked very animated he was very glad to meet the crowds and subsequently he has done further engagements and this one uh with his son uh was you know particularly sort of public I mean it’s going to get a lot of attention uh for the reasons that you mentioned the slight controversy over Prince Harry and also the fact that you get Prince William and the King together and and seeing them getting on well and uh you know seeing him the king sort of out and about and meet people again which as you rightly say is what exactly what he likes doing um and I understand he also spoke a little bit about his treatment um and and one of the effects of chemotherapy that that he was losing the um sense of taste which is one of the things that can happen obviously the treatment is ongoing and um well what I would say is I think he’s very lucky that that’s really pretty much the only symptom that he’s had because it can be very unpleasant sometimes so I think he’s doing rather well is what I’m trying to say ever since he first went into hospital for what was described as you know the prostrate um investigation he’s been extremely open about what’s been going on about his treatment and of course uh naturally when talking to another cancer patient uh that’s going to bring out the best in him and the the sympathy and empathy if you like because they can discuss it oneto one so I think he’s you know he’s obviously he he must have had a pretty difficult time these last uh weeks and months but um now he’s getting better and he can uh share it openly with with people who’ve suffered the same thing and so there is a sort of bond between them and I think that’s um that’s one of the things that he’s really good at and so I I suspect we might see a little bit more of this in the in the coming weeks frankly

This is the moment Prince William takes off in a helicopter after he was made leader of an Army unit by King Charles.

Charles has made Prince William the leader of his brother’s helicopter unit and didn’t even mention Harry during his speech in a major snub.

Charles, 75, met with William, 41, in front of an Apache chopper as he officially made his eldest son the leader of Harry’s former helicopter unit.

The monarch was spotted arriving at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, Hampshire, in a rare joint engagement for father and son.

  2. It has nothing to do with Harry. The media is creating issues. This role has always been the role of the prince of wales. Harry wasn’t even a pilot. He was the bomber
Kc NEVER REFUSED HARRY TO VUSIT LAST WEEK. Get your story straight

  3. Lovely to see William getting his recognition for being a Real Pilot…..Its such a shame Diana didnt have a girl as her second child….never would have married MM, and that would be a world bonus!!

  4. oh the irony. Harry and Megs left because of press attention, now it is 100 times worse. There is no way Charles did this as any 'snub', it was his role as PoW, so would naturally go to William, yet the press turn it into a 'snub' to sell papers. I imagine Charles and William are deeply upset about all of this, as it detracts from their good work, that is never self serving!!! Such a shame and I do just hope Harry sees the damage all of this is causing.

  5. WILLIAM is Pathetic; and His FATHER PRINCE CHARLES IS PATHETIC ALSO! LIKE FATHER, LIKE son! PRINCE CHARLES GOT RID OF PRINCESS DIANA HIS MOTHER, AND, PRINCE WILLIAM HAS NOW GOTTEN RID OF PRINCESS CATHERINE TOO! WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!!!!!! BUT TODAY’S EVENT, KING CHARLES DID THIS OUT OF SPITE TO HIS SON, OF HIS HONORS TO HIS COUNTRY, PRINCE HARRY! CHARLES’S TIMING OF THIS PARTICULAR EVENT WAS TO SPITE PRINCE HARRY, BECAUSE OF HIS TRIP TO NIGERIA! HOW SPITEFUL “CHARLES “! WHAT A GREAT, GREAT KING?????? YOU ARE??????? I THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD CANCER? DOES THIS LOOK LIKE WHAT THE HEART OF SOMEONE THAT HAS CANCER WOULD DO! THE JEALOUSY AND HATRED AND SHAMEFULNESS; JUST PURE WICKEDNESS OF THIS ORDEAL AIRED FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE! HOW RIDICULOUSLY SPITEFUL TOO! GREAT JOB! KING! QUEEN ELIZABETH MUST BE TURNING OVER IN HER GRAVE AND PRINCESS DIANA TOO, OF HOW YOU’RE TREATING THEIR SON, PRINCE HARRY!!!!!

  6. I’m American and love William! He has the maturity fit to serve the country. 🥰 Harry is an angry man child unfortunately and it’s good he moved away.

  7. SUN have you ever seen Harry flying a Apache helicopter? a course not. Harry failed his aviator test three times in a row. Harry never qualified to fly helicopters. Harry's imagination got carried away in his book Spare.
Harry never killed 25 Taliban. Harry is a Royal in line for the Throne, therefore he cannot be sent into a Taliban Warzone, into Harms Way.

  8. Harry never flew a helicopter. He did not pass the test, three times. He flew in a helicopter as a gunner but never as a license pilot in the military. Do you research. Harry also turned his back on king and country wiling and all for the love of money. He chose to quit !!

  9. Are YOU the putative “Royal Editor?” You display an appalling lack of knowledge, an inability to be impartial and an inclination to create problems. Resign, please…anyone else would be fired!

  10. The duke of nothing did not fly an apache helicopter in Afghanistan he failed the test several attempts he was merely the gunner no offence to gunners intended.
Print William is a recognised helicopter pilot so yes he did actually fly that apache. Again get facts right.
Harry has never flown as the pilot in Afghanistan or anywhere else for that matter.

  11. Why would the king even say anything about his second son, this doesn't have any barring on Harry. Prince William next in line, William carries a pilot license where Harry never passed the test, also Harry gave up his pride for money.

  12. See how a simple trip to motherland Nigeria 🇳🇬 can unsettle folks in England and cause a lot of chatter about a boy that’s moved on.

Can’t they do their stuff without bothering to always drag the boy into it everytime?

  13. LETS SEE HARRY, AVIATION LEGEND, DO THIS. 😅😅😂😂 HE BOUGHT HIMSELF THAT AWARD. HE WAS A GUNNER NOT A PILOT..!!!! HE FLIES NOTHING!

WELL DONE WILLIAM. COLONEL IN CHIEF OF ARMY CORP.

  14. Harry isn’t being a snub. Harry chose to leave the position of working royal. He thinks he should get the perks of a working royal and not doing any of the work. He needs to shut up and quit pretending he is representing anyone but himself. And making money off the royal title he isn’t suppose to use

  15. Prince William is absolutely fabulous! Handsome, caring, intelligent, strong and talented!
Love, hugs and prayers to you and your beautiful family!
    🙏💖🙏💖🙏 🇺🇸💕🇬🇧

  16. You do not need to mention Harry. You are so obviously a Harry devotee. Give it over as we don’t want to constantly be hearing comparisons.
My understanding is Harry was NOT a pilot as he failed his tests. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

  17. He’s not flying it, he was sat in the gunners seat. The pilots seat is the rear seat. Yes he flies but he didn’t fly the Apache.

  18. The only picture we saw of harry was sitting in the cockpit posing for the camera….never saw him fly one of those big machines…..oh yeah…. maybe because he failed so many times at trying to get his pilots license!🤔

  19. Yes Prince William is the good son and he will be a great King with Princess Kathryn by his side..as for Harry he has made his bed and now is unhappily laying in it.. maybe meg will immigrate to her newfound country – Nigeria – we can only but hope😢
