Tens of thousands protest in Malmo as Israel competes in Eurovision final • FRANCE 24 English

it’s the largest live music event in the world and one that Prides itself on bringing countries together through music but this year’s Eurovision contest held in the Swedish city of Malmo is more divided than ever over its inclusion of Israel I would like it to be so that music will unite people and we all love music but this year music is dividing people and I don’t like that putting on a show like EUR vision is just just feels wrong when these things are happening so uh I’m showing my support from Palestine and hope that the countries and the leading people of the countries will react in some way crowds of over 10,000 people took to the city’s streets chanting free Palestine calling for boycotts and divestment from Israel the focus of the protests Israeli contestant Eden goolan one of the 10 act who made it through Thursday semifinal despite being booed on stage the 20-year-old says she will not be discouraged I have the best security team to take care of me and the entire delegation and it’s up to the people what to do they have the right to speak their voice um but I’m focusing on my part which is giving the best performance and on the good on the Good Vibes the good people eurovision’s broadcaster Ebu has rejected demands of Israel’s disqualification saying the event should remain apolitical on stage but despite its comment politics seeping into the contest isn’t new in 2022 Eurovision disqualified Russia over its invasion of Ukraine

The Eurovision Song Contest final gets underway in Sweden’s Malmo on Saturday with thousands of protesters expected to culminate a week of tensions surrounding Israel’s participation during the Gaza war. Israel ranks with Croatia and Switzerland as one of the bookmakers’ favourites to succeed Sweden and take home the colourful and kitschy competition watched by more than a hundred million people.

  1. Israel singer has such courage and resilience, to be able to endure so much bullying and threats. Hope she wins to show Europe is better than hate, just because of nationality.

  2. This evening, we will see that the world is with victim and not with aggressor. 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱

  3. This would not be an issue if there weren't a double-standard and Russia hadn't been booted in the past. However, a double-standard does exist, here and elsewhere, when it comes to Israel.

  4. Morrocanoil, the Eurovision's main sponsor, is an Israeli company despite what the name suggests. The EBU are ok with a country declaring war as long as they make money.
