what used to be a village of 4,000 inhabitants now buried under rocks hundreds of homes were swallowed by a massive landslide in the isolated anger Province Drone footage filmed on Friday shows the extent of Destruction an emergency Convoy has been delivering food water and other Provisions to survivors but the terrain is making rescue efforts particularly difficult with Highway access blocked in the area only accessible via helicopter Community leaders like Andrew ring have been assessing the damage and the locals on ground the boys right there at the back of me they’re telling me that this is a massive destruction that took place and more than 300 lives were lost and they were f as leave and all of a sudden uh natural catastrophe took place and the the place was covered by rocks as you can see footage from the scene shows locals digging for bodies from beneath rubble and trees as families anxiously wait it’s still unclear how many bodies are still trapped the operation to reach those affected has been Complicated by fears there could be more landslides prime minister James mape has said disaster officials the Defense Force and the department of works and highways are assisting with relief and Recovery efforts

Rescue crews arrived at the site of a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea’s remote highlands Saturday, helping villagers search for hundreds of people feared dead under towering mounds of rubble and mud. The disaster struck an isolated part of Enga province around 3:00 am Friday, according to government officials, wiping out swathes of the hillside settlement as villagers slept.
