There have long been tensions between the Paris government and pro-independence voices among the indigenous Kanak population in New Caledonia, colonised in the second half of the 19th century and part of French overseas territories spanning the globe.

  1. They are already let to run their country themselves, New Caledonia is autonomous. It has its own congress, its own government, its own president, its own provincial congresses….
    The vast majority of the positions in the government are held by kanaks. They run New Caledonia. New Caledonia is run by Caledonians.
