outside a polling booth in Mexico City where voters are getting ready to cast their ballots in the biggest election in Mexican history it’s both the biggest in terms of the numbers of Voters in the country of 130 million people and the biggest in terms of the jobs the posts being elected is everything from Mayors to Governors to Congress to Senate to state legislators to the top job the presidency itself now the front runner for the presidency is cloudia sha Bal a 61y old environmental engineer and the anointed successor of the current president andrees Manuel Lopez orador they call themselves a left-wing party but it’s in many ways a kind of populist nationalist party with a reform program and she is far ahead in the polls in second place is Sashi galz of the opposition Alliance a mix of everything from the old ruling party to conservatives to C social Democrats and so forth but she’s about 20 points behind either way Mexico will elect its first female president and this would also be the first female president in the whole of North America so quite a historic occasion there now the election campaign has been stained by violence there’s been 37 candidates for mostly for mayor but for some other jobs who have been been assassinated the last one was killed on the very last day of campaign there was a pistol put to his head while he was shaking hands with voters a very brutal incident there so a certain tension here but here in Mexico City pretty peaceful here people waiting for about an hour before the polls Keen to cast their ballot in the biggest election in Mexican history

Nearly 100 million people are registered to vote in the race to replace outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Voters will also elect governors in nine of the country’s 32 states, and choose candidates for both houses of Congress, thousands of mayorships and other local posts, in the biggest elections the nation has seen and ones that have been marked by violence.
