European Union: How are the 720 MEPs elected? • FRANCE 24 English
take a look at how the European parliamentary elections work next June 720 MEPS will be elected a number that’s steadily fallen over the past 20 years elections are held every 5 years allowing citizens of all 27 member states to choose their representatives in the European Parliament the larger the population the more MPS they elect Germany has 96 and France has 81 at the other end of the scale Luxembourg Malta and Cyprus each have only six the election process isn’t the same in every country in France voters don’t cast a ballot for a single candidate instead they choose a list of candidates nominated by political parties each party list has its candidate in a fixed order and the more votes they receive the more of its list will be elected meanwhile in Malta and Ireland voters cast their ballots in order of preference meaning no single candidate is assured of being elected in most countries the lists are the same Across the Nation so no matter where you live in the country you vote for the same candidate list only Italy Poland and Belgium offer Regional lists however there are some aspects which are the same for voters across the block MEPS are chosen by direct universal suffrage in a single round vote that will take place between the 6th and 9th of June although EU elections are proportional meaning the number of elected MEPS tallies with their overall vote some countries such as France and Greece set a minimum threshold of between 2 and 5% for a party to gain a seat in the European Parliament other countries such as Germany have no such minimum
Starting this Thursday (June 6) and through next weekend, Europeans will begin voting in EU parliamentary elections.
