European Elections: Ireland’s exodus of young doctors • FRANCE 24 English

Kate is a young doctor working in the town of tore she’s just one of hundreds into the profession that will immigrate from Ireland to Australia this year according to Kate the working conditions in her home country are much worse than down under it’s longer working hours um I wouldn’t say like the pay is necessarily bad it’s just in Australia you’ll get the same pay for doing less work all of my friends are going um so I’d have maybe 15 20 close friends going uh from my graduating class there maybe 40 or 50 maybe more going the number of young Medics immigrating to Australia from Ireland is on the rise according to one survey 73% of medical graduates were considering immigrating when they qualified so this year 535 Irish doctors uh immigrated to Australia or got visas to work in Australia and that’s quite a significant number relative to the number that Ireland trains Ireland trains about 750 doctors each year the shortage of doctors has meant that 34s of GP practices in Ireland have closed their list to new patients the cost of living is another driving Factor behind the mass Exodus prices of goods and services in Ireland are 46% above the EU average and it’s not just medical professionals who are quitting Irish Shores teachers are also leaving in their droves with 3,000 posts currently vacant there is estimated to be around 27,000 Irish people currently in Australia with over 20,000 of that number under the age of 30

As Europe goes to the polls, skewed work-life balance, housing and cost of living crises are key issues for people across the continent. In Ireland, many young doctors and teachers are leaving for countries where they can afford a better lifestyle, in particular Australia. Over 500 will make the journey in 2024, leaving Ireland with a shortage of medical professionals.

  1. So Ireland trains them, Australia enjoys them as doctors. I assume the State provide (almost) free education paid through normal taxes by the whole population. When the doctors leave, it’s a net loss for Ireland. The young lady interviewed said that salary is not bad in Ireland, just longer hours. Maybe it is because the young doctors don’t stay in Ireland? Obviously if the pool of doctors get smaller and smaller due to emigrant doctors, the remaining ones would have to cover for them. Sounds like a catch 22. But on a different view, if “Society” paid for your education and then you say “Effe You Society, thanks for the education, I’m leaving”, you should at least repay your debt

  2. Best of luck with the cost of living down under. Two doctors will need to double their income to buy a small 2 bed house. Just crazy you believe to see it to believe it.

  3. Funny how when its white ppl emigrating in large numbers you guys in the comments dont make it all about shifting demographics or loosing a country’s culture. If other ppl were allowed paths to emigrate like this it resolve alot of issues of irregular migration

  4. What about all the doctors, engineers, and scientists coming in from Afghanistan, Africa, and the Middle East who are coming in by the boatload from Calais and then crossing into Ireland to replace Irish doctors like her? 😅

  5. I’m someone who has a lot of friends who are newly trained doctors. They go to Australia for a year or 2 and then majority come back. It’s for the great pay and better hours. However Australia isn’t good for progressing your career. It’s encouraged to go out there and work a year or 2 also.

  6. This problem exists but the new generation run rather than fight. Weak and self serving. They don't know how to fight for change or couldnt be bothered. I.hope they don't come back, good riddens.

  7. Our traitorous criminal governments are responsible for this along with the Rxpe of medical resource in India and Philippines to back fill gaps with cheaper medical staff from these nations.

  8. Foreign doctors would be well advised to insist on housing provision before agreeing to come to Ireland. Or, at least research the housing situation here before you come.

  9. If a student in Ireland is aspiring to be a doctor or a nurse, he/she will require a certain amount of points in the leaving certificate to get into a university to do the degree or to start the training in a hospital.
If they don’t have enough points and still want to pursue one of these careers, they will go over to England for example and do their degree/training there and return to Ireland when qualified to find work and be accepted….

Now all the students graduating in Ireland are leaving Ireland for better conditions and being replaced by foreign qualified doctors and nurses, who in a lot of cases would not have had enough points to be accepted into an Irish university or hospital to do a degree or training in the first place….How does any of this, make any sense and what is the government going to do about it?

  10. Stupid/ignorant govt is more concerned with undocumented free loaders than improving the working conditions of the local patriotic workforce.

  11. They could always recruit experienced doctors and teachers from all those currently accommodated in tents along the Grand Canal. Mary-Loon McDonald has assured us that most of these young men are highly trained health professionals and university STEM lecturers.

  12. It’s okay, we’re being sent young male doctors from countries like Algeria, Afghanistan and various other Muslim countries. They’re coming on boats and they’re sleeping in tents on the street so they’re not too worried about the cost of living in the city.

  13. What do you expect when the country is turning into a third world dump. Replaced with unskilled migration whilst Australia poaches only skilled migrants. This is why UK, Ireland, Sweden and Germany etc are collapsing.

  14. There needs to a way to ensure they pay back the cost of their training when they go, otherwise they're just freeloading off the Irish tax payer
