Trump convicted on all charges in hush money trial: Will he go to jail? • FRANCE 24 English

here to tell us more our International Affairs commentator Douglas Herbert hello to you Doug will we heard on the report it ended about the sentencing date in July what do you think will come from the sentencing is Trump going to be behind bars yeah look if I were a betting man I’d say that it’s very very unlikely Trump is going to seal see the walls of a jail cell uh anytime soon um not in this trial uh I say that not because uh it’s my opinion but because the judge himself Juan merchan has made it very clear that he wanted to go out of his way not to sort of immerse himself and be seen as being political here going into the political Freight doing something that might even Stoke up his base and underscore validate their narrative what I would call a false narrative that this uh trial was nothing more than a political Vendetta by a Democrat Le Administration that’s weaponized the justice system um what he’s more likely to get is uh something that takes into account um the context uh of of this trial and also who the defendant is it’s easy to say you know Donald Trump should be treated like any other citizen but the reality is here he is the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party in the midst of a highly volatile and charged uh presidential campaign um he’s more likely to get either some sort of some form of probation right he has 34 counts technically on each of those counts William 16 months to four years in prison they’re not consecutive they will overlap so what people have been saying is yes at a maximum he could see four years in prison he’s probably going to get either probation probably a he a f fine either moderate to to sort of heavy although by Donald Trump’s standards you might argue about what is a heavy fine um he could get community service he could even be asked to even spend some weekends in prison which would be minimal prison time I don’t see that happening either I see this sentence as being tailored to the circumstances of the of the highly charged political realities who the candidate is and like I said that stated ambition and determination by the judge himself not to be seen as wanting to be out there to inflict punishment on Donald Trump he may actually at the end of the day July 11th on that day of sentencing uh deem that the the very visibility the high-profile nature of this entire thing nearly six weeks of testimony Donald Trump before the not the cameras of the world but before the reporters of the world being reported in very very very you know uh Vivid detail that that’s enough punishment If This Were anyone else but Donald Trump we’d probably talk about this as a death blow to their political career after the verdict was read Trump’s caign team said the website fundraising website crashed from people giving donations how does this affect the race to the White House the election November first of all this is all part of a pattern right when he was um briefly arrested last year in in the state of Georgia um in in a separate case which hasn’t gone to to trial now on Election interference he had his mug shot taken and that mug shot as you know became a mean it went viral and and he raised over $7 million in a very short span of time just from the the power the V the viral power of that meme um so Donald Trump has in a sense he accuses Biden of weaponizing the justice system well Donald Trump is very much weaponized in a sense for his own campaign benefit uh these types of Trials and we don’t see any anything different uh happening in this case right now going ahead he said he uh launched basically an appeal to his partisans to his base uh shortly after the verdict saying I am a political prisoner those were his words so he is already framing this once again doubling down on the narrative that we have been reporting and talking about for months now that he is the victim of the worst political Witch Hunt in history he is being right now punished essentially for uh going up against a President Joe Biden who knows that if this were actually a free election he’d have no chance of winning uh so this is all the narrative right now Donald Trump is going to I think double down on that narrative he literally has nothing to lose at this point by doing that the question is in a tight race where down to votes in a handful of battleground States maybe 880,000 votes in five or six states that are going to determine this election will this type of conviction and will that type of persistent narrative at some point dig into his potential to expand That Base Beyond his DieHard supporters to the independent and the undecided the so-called swing voters yeah and the supporters calling this a kangaroo court but Trump also faces other legal challenges other court cases absolutely no breaking news there will uh you know as well as I he has three other criminal trials pending two of those are State trials uh sorry one of those the one in Georgia as a state trial two of them are federal trials the Miami uh the the Florida case involving uh mishandling of documents classified documents and the other the Washington DC based Federal Criminal Case which involves uh charges of interfering overturning the outcome of a of an election and obstructing the peaceful transfer of power none of those have come to court yet there are total of 54 felony counts if you combine all of those cases but like I said this may be the only case we see before November likely the only case we see given the current C calendar and the delaying we’ve seen that is actually going to come to a courtroom if Donald Trump is eventually elected in November the thinking is the conventional wisdom could it be wrong sure but the conventional wisdom is none of those trials will ever come to court all right thank you Doug Douglas Herbert our International Affairs commentator

A New York jury convicted Donald Trump on all charges in his hush money case Thursday in a seismic development barely five months ahead of the election where he seeks to recapture the White House. The first criminal trial of a former US president ended with the 77-year-old Trump found guilty on each of the 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a payment meant to silence porn star Stormy Daniels. FRANCE 24’s International Affairs Commentator Douglas Herbert tells us more.

  1. I will be very surprise if the Judge send him to Jail. So don't tell me that we don't have a 2 tiers law, we do. I can't imaging If anyone other than Trump have done half of what Trump did, probably has been in jail long time ago.
