During the BBC’s live TV election debate, Penny Mordaunt said the election was about the cost of living crisis and claimed ‘Labour will put up your taxes by £2,000’, repeating a line made days earlier by Rishi Sunak during ITV’s debate.

Labour’s Angela Rayner responded quickly, repeating ‘that is a lie’, and claimed the Conservatives had raised taxes to record levels, which Mordaunt accepted. The Tories said the £2,000 figure was drawn from independent Treasury data, but the Treasury’s top mandarin, James Bowler, told the government that the figure ‘should not be presented as having been produced by the civil service’. Labour say the claim is inaccurate. The BBC debate included key figures from seven parties and is the second live debate in the run up to the general election on 4 July

  1. Angela is so thick, I can’t bring myself to vote Labour. I’ll take a punt on reform thank you. Better policies all round.

  2. Tories stole millions through the house of lords during COVID. HMRC is doing virtually nothing about it yet going after struggling small businesses.

Billions wasted literally / stolen. Absolute vermin.

  3. Having seen this, I'm glad a I didn't watch the debate! Penny Mordaunt was a disgrace and should have actually been stopped from saying what everyone knows to be a total lie. She KNOWS she's lie-ing, and thinks that if she shouts it loud enough it becomes true.

  4. Mordaunt is shocking (and not just in the hair department), I hope she and EVERY single lying self-serving tory lose their job this July. Disgraceful, and embarrassing for this country, a country they have destroyed with austerity and brexit.

  5. GLOBAL UNITY, FORMED FROM GLOBAL RESPECT, HELP US GAIN MORE GLOBAL UNITY SECURITY AS A COUNTRY, WHICH WILL HELP TO PREVENT MORE CONFLICT AND MORE COST.
HELPING THE UKRAINE WILL HELP PREVENT A LOT OF FUTURE COST. AS IF PUTIN GETS INTO EUROPE, THEN HE WILL CAUSE THOUSANDS OF TIMES MORE MONEY TO FIGHT HIM THERE.
BUT WE ALSO NEED TO PUT ALL OF OUR MOMENTUM INTO ARMY TEAM WORK OF TRAINING UP TOGETHER. I AM BACKING 'PENNY MORDAUNT', OVER THIS SENTIMENT.

  6. THE ARMY CAN BE LUCRATIVE IN FRIENDSHIP TO OTHER COUNTRY'S AND FORM EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY. IT IS NO BAD THING. BUT TRAINING TO PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE SHOULD COMBINE TO EDUCATION AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE IN THIS ENDEAVOUR.

  7. I pay more that £2k a year extra currently in mortgage repayments thanks to Liz Truss. The Tories have no place telling us they are there to keep money in our pockets. They’ve not only taken it off me but they’ve killed off the services I rely on. F off.

  8. And after all this they were practically hugging each other and giggling when they thought the cameras were of it's all a show people they don't give a eff about you

  9. Penny Mordant comes across as very aggressive , , shows little respect towards Angela Rayner ! If this is the New style Political debate , what hope is there for our future

  10. We really need to start questioning why it is that the establishment and media want us to fear and hate Farage just as much as they do…. This compulsion to supress the truth and anyone who dares to tell it has to stop…. We have a once in a generation opportunity to stand together and have our voices heard…… The sitting on hands complacency which allowed khan to re-elect himself has to stop…. The tories are finished, labour will win the general election, but let's ensure that he is facing the man of the people in parliament, Farage will expose the weakness and lies of starmer week in week out… Reform UK

  11. ‘That is a lie’ Rishi lived in a shoebox in the street when he was growing up, his only meal was hot gravel. Obviously, that was not in term time, then he was in the £50k per annum Winchester College.
