It was originally on Channel 4 though. Channel 4 had the rights to it in the UK during original-air and continued having them for years afterwards. I still remember watching it every week on Channel 4 when the new episode was out. It’s one of the few instances where terrestrial had the show for its full run and it later moved to cable for repeats. The fact that it was on terrestrial is probably the major reason it was so popular in the UK in the 90s and 00s.
I didn’t have cable so I remember Friends dearly as one of the “big” shows I got.
