  1. According to some estimates, up to one million people have fled Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. But some of them are starting to return home, discouraged by the scarcity of available jobs and difficulties getting visas and long-term residence permits.

“One less engineer is one less missile flying in the direction of Ukraine,” Russian opposition activist and former State Duma lawmaker Dmitry Gudkov said in Paris.

  2. The problem with this is if you have a Russian passport you get fucked trying to do anything. They would need to fix this if they want to brain drain russia

  3. The West would have to be really careful in taking any Russians who may be compromised. FSB could easily hold a Russian expat’s family as ransome in exchange for espionage.

Not sure if taking in Russians would be a good idea.

  4. As a phd scientist with many educated russian friends, i can also tell you this group is more immune to propoganda and not Putin’s friend. Losing high level R&D scientists and Engineers will weaken Russia and their war machine to help thwart Putin’s imperial ambitions.

  5. I don’t think it’s as simple as all that. We have seen Russian “refugees” in places like Germany and Poland that are allowed to stay who wholly support the actions of Putin, they just didn’t want to get drafted.

  6. Just see what they said on their social medias during the war first. If they never agreee to this, why not

  7. How about recruit then for espionage purposes with the promise they can come to the EU when the regime collapses

  8. No Russian visas should be allowed….zero. Total ban on all Russian citizens travelling to the EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. A total ban.

  9. they can’t be given any sensitive jobs because the chances of them being a spy is not zero.

  10. No thanks! They will just act as a fifth column, when Russia inevitably begins it’s aggression against NATO in the future.

  11. Here is a hypothetical for the subreddit to ponder: a German Jewish person is fleeing Germany in 1936, would you all think letting him in your country is a “double edged sword” like someone in the thread said, since he could be a nazi spy? Should you prohibit him in to leave Germany, “force them to rise up” like another commenter here said?

  12. Yes, this would work. As for those pro Putin Russians, don’t worry about htem. Ukraine has both elite interests and a lot of activists supporting them, infact, pro Ukraine activism outstrips the pro Russian activiism, so Ukraine has both status and institutions on her side while Russia doesn’t even have activism on her side.

  13. We have witnessed how Russian expats have often behaved in other countries. I have also seen a lot of good Russians who openly and loudly despise Russia’s aggression, so I am not fully against this.

Any such immigration would need to be contingent on [re|de]enunciation of the current Russian government, and immediately revokable in the event that pro-Russian behavior is observed.
