Ukraine says ability to strike targets in Russia helping stave off Kharkiv attack

the trip to North Korea is coming on day 846 of Russia’s war on Ukraine in fact Russia launched a new offensive in harke just last month and that is where Brier Stewart is reporting from today leading a CBC News team in Ukraine harke has been hit by several devastating drone strikes in the past recent days last month in harke there were 76 aerial attacks on this city of a million residents that included missiles drones bombs and that was three times as many as the month before and it really was just horrific I want to show you where I am this is a very large mall called the epicenter and I think you know just taking a look at what’s behind me gives you a very good indication of the horror that happened here you can see the entire uh building is charred there’s very little left this was hit by two Russian bombs on a Saturday afternoon while people were doing their shopping uh there is you know security vi video from inside of people kind of just walking in and then the entire Place explodes there were at least 19 people killed here uh dozens of others were injured and this was just one of the sites uh that was targeted in April now since then things have become quieter here uh for a couple of reasons and what the main one is Ukraine says because it now has the ability permission from the US to use we Western weapons to fire over the border into Russia uh Ukraine says it’s been able to strike military Target so some of these missile systems that Russia was using uh to strike harke uh that doesn’t mean it’s it’s all quiet I mean you still have this city and the region around it um under an air raate alert for several hours a day uh kind of all through the day in the morning and in at night as well and we were in an area just a a little further away from here a little further north today and you could hear in the distant very distant but you could hear uh the sound of artillery and so we know that the front line is very very active you have Russian forces that are about 25 kilomet from where I am now and and Ukraine says it’s been able to to stabilize the area uh but there is a a lot of fierce fighting going on because you know this is a city that was able to to hold the Russians back uh during the initial days of the invasion in February 2022 and I think some people living here were very surprised uh when in May Russian forces were able to get over the Border again and start advancing so rer Stewart reporting from harke uh for us this morning

Ukraine says receiving permission to use Western weapons to attack military targets inside Russia is weakening Russia’s ability to launch bombardments of cities such as Kharkiv.
