Yes the US or actually NATO could create a condition which would end the war Russia has inflicted on Ukraine. There is no scenario imaginable in which Russia could improve their situation by using nuclear weapons. During the Cold War, no side threatened the use of nuclear weapons as Putin is casually tossing that threat around whenever he doesn’t get his way in his expansionist war. If he is allowed to get away with this outrageous bluff, he will just keep playing the same card again and again to get whatever he wants. If Putin does actual use a tactical nuclear weapon or gets close to actually using a nuclear weapon, NATO could use its vastly superior conventional air and naval power to quickly destroy about half of military capabilities Russia has available to use against Ukraine. At that point, Ukraine could finish Russia’s war of expansion victoriously pretty quickly and Russia would have to stop fighting. Russia has succeeded in proving their conventional military power is far less than was generally believed to be in January of 2022. Unfortunately Putin far overestimated is military.
