‘Chaotic day in Kenya’: Protesters enter parliament, bodies seen in streets nearby • FRANCE 24

for more I’m joined by France 24 correspondent Olivia bizo from Nairobi Olivia what’s the current situation there hello yes you may not be able to hear me incredibly well that’s because uh the internet here has has been blocked it’s incredibly slow across Nairobi and uh across the country uh X formerly known as Twitter has also been blocked across Kenya Kenya as we speak now the latest is that President William Ruto is expected to speak very shortly about this chaotic day of protest that has taken place it will be the first time that sun has made an announcement about the protest uh despite them having begun early this morning at around 8:30 a.m. so the protests uh began early this morning they were mostly peaceful in a lot of areas but there were some pockets of violence as protesters throw what rock at police police responded by firing tear gas they also fired water cannon and later fired rubber bullets but things really escal escalated when protesters stormed uh the parliament where MPS were passing the legislation of this contentious 2024 finance bill that would raise kenan’s taxes now the protesters managed to get into Parliament just after was pass pass and they even set fire to the parliament videos um of that fire have been circulating across social media they also stormed the city hall and a fire was set there as well so it really has been a very chaotic day here in Nairobi but not just in the capital also across the country as protests uh have been taking place as I said earlier the president is expected to talk and so we’ll have to see what he says um and whether it will fire up protesters even more uh so we’ll have to definitely follow this story story in the coming days and weeks all right that’s France 24’s uh Olivia bizo reporting for us from Nairobi

Part of Kenya’s parliament building was on fire Tuesday as thousands of protesters opposing a new finance bill entered and legislators fled, in the most direct assault on the government in decades. Journalists saw at least three bodies outside the complex where police had opened fire. Protesters had demanded that legislators vote against the bill imposing new taxes on a country, East Africa’s economic hub, where frustrations over the high cost of living have simmered for years. FRANCE 24’s Olivia Bizot reports from Nairobi.
