One must understand that war crimes are a strategic tool for Putin; they aim to undermine rule-based world order by discrediting various institutions, such as the ICC. In essence, Russia is saying, “What are you going to do about it?” and “see? They don’t mean shit.”
The goal is to establish a new world order where larger nations don’t have to follow these rules; they can trample smaller countries as they wish, dictate what they do, and even commit war crimes as a means of compliance.
This is something people who are against supporting Ukraine don’t understand. This isn’t just a war about territory in Ukraine. It’s a war on rules-based world order, a war that, if lost, would create a world much more chaotic, violent and unstable.
