  1. By Brendan Cole – Senior News Reporter:

A left-wing coalition has won the most seats in France’s second round of legislative elections, dealing a blow to the far-right which had hoped to build on gains in the first round of the ballot.

No one got an absolute majority in the 577-seat National Assembly, but official results put the leftist grouping New Popular Front in first place with 180 seats, ahead of the 160 seats of the centrist alliance of President Emmanuel Macron, who called the snap ballot a month ago.

  2. Salvini wished Le Pen good luck and expressed his desire to punish Macron.

So the victory of the left was pretty much a certainty at that point.

Poor clown, he can’t seem to catch a break.

  3. Macron swallowed his ego and played it smart, amazing dude. I’m just excited to see Right Wing Indians on Twitter have a meltdown

  4. “bUt ThE lEfT nEeDs To AdDrEsS iMmIgRaTiOn” according to the illuminated political minds that infest this sub.
Go stew on your own prejudice.

  5. Godo… Meloni and Salivini next please… 1 by 1 Europe and neighbors are finally cleaning up

  6. Did they? They actually got the most votes. But there was a lot of tactical voting.

  7. Macron won the gamble of transforming the French parliament… into the Italian parliament.

    Magic

  8. They went from 88 MPs to 126, or 143 if we count their alliance with part of the republican party before the election (which we should count).

It is less than they expected and the polls suggested a few weeks ago but they are continuing to rise as they have in the last 20 years.

Additionally, France used first past the post in 577 boroughs for legislative elections so the number of seats does not accurately represent the popular vote. In number of voters the Rassemblement National (formerly Front National) was first in both rounds.

The worst has been avoided for now but presidential elections are due in 3 years and the inevitable is looming. And if it’s not this time it will be later, Marine le Pen is young.

Besides, historically France has dealt really badly with the idea of consensus in parliament and hates a weak president, so with no obvious alliance able to secure a majority in parliament things will get very ugly.

Lastly, France made the decision in the 90’s to hold the presidential and legislative elections back to back to give a majority to the president so they can rule. Now that those two elections are staggered by about half a presidential term, we can expect France to lack government very often in the future. Now let’s see if the French are ok with going full Belgium and having no parliament for extended periods of time, or if something is done to address this. There will either be unprecedented compromises or another rewrite of the constitution to give the president more power, which is what the current version was set to achieve.

  9. Macron showed them the definition of genius. Now all he will do is deal with swinging between the Ecologists, PS of Glucksman, and the Republicans, anything between extreme left and extreme right to get whatever his coalition needs and block the LFI and Le Pen anytime anywhere. He will play both sides like a fiddle and somehow manage to get his people a nice shot at the 2027 presidential election.

  10. People behave like they lose the power or something, like in UK. Spoiler alert: they won way more seats than last election

  11. Honestly, with the 2 rounds voting system France has, wasn’t it rather predictable for the RN not to win and lose a lot since the majority of voters won’t vote for right-wingers?

  12. Man what is far right? This woman was all in for more gov expenditure, bring back pensions, gov regulation in markets, etc.

  13. One commentator said they don’t even want majority at this time anyways. They want to be outside so they can stoke fires until the elections in 2027 where they can grab the president post and PM.
