Children’s hospital hit as Russian strikes kill 24 in Ukraine | BBC News

in Ukraine there are reports of a major daytime missile attack President Vladimir zalinski shared this video online of damage to a children’s hospital in keev he says that Russia has fired more than 40 missiles where you can see these live pictures that were getting in from ke now that looks like the aftermath of that attack well there were five Ukrainian cities involved including Kei where five people have been reportedly killed 10 have been killed in the Central City of c c um svans Deno and katos are also believed to have been hit well our correspondent Abdu jali Abdu rasulov sent us this update from keev the sky line behind me was covered with plumes of smoke and Russia used at least 40 missiles to Target cities across Ukraine including the capital Keef as well and we still don’t know how many of those missiles managed to hit their targets we could hear large explosions here in Kev and it appears that the Ukrainian air air defense systems were engaged and tried to shoot down those missiles uh but some of those missiles tried to change their trajectory as they were trying to hit the targets and mislead and avoid the Ukrainian air defense systems and some of those missiles did manage to get through and hit their targets including the Children’s Hospital in k the video show posted on social media shows the destruction inside and outside of the building and some of the Personnel members uh were reportedly injured during the attack as well other cities across Ukraine uh were also targeted by uh the Russian missiles including the cities of nepro krators K and others and we we are getting reports from K that a number of people were injured and killed during the attack on that city as well more on this so with me as our Russia editor for BBC monitoring Vitali shevchenko thanks very much for joining me uh Vitali so this news is coming into US within the last hour or so that’s correct uh there’s shock and dismay in Ukraine that the country’s biggest Children’s Hospital has been hit by Russian missile and footage circulating on social media appears to show the missile hitting the uh the hospital not debris so it appears that targeted that hospital there are scenes of uh ordinary residents of Kev trying to sift through the rubble rescue have us trapped at the scene uh doctors in blood splattered gowns also at the scene helping uh survivors the capitals mayor vital Klitschko has has been um to the hospital and he he spoke of and a quote horror and genocide U according to him Russians are committing genocide against uh ukrainians elsewhere in Ukraine and K which is President zin’s home City at least 10 people have been confirmed dead details are still coming in um as to what happened in Ukraine it’s relatively unusual for Russia to carry out a daytime strike normally it happens at night and the the number of missiles um more than 40 apparently suggests that the the purpose was to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses and that’s why so many El and made it to their targets and you mentioned uh the mayor there who who speaking uh outside the children’s hospital and he was he was saying that this is the worst attack that that they’ve seen in two years that’s correct and uh he was asked by journalists about the number of uh victims and he he said there are fatalities he wasn’t prepared to give the exact number the latest I’ve seen from the scene is is that at least one uh dead body has been recovered from under the Rob wall uh there are also pictures of children apparently patients of a cancer unit there outside the hospital um lots of mothers as well Milling around and there’s nothing to suggest any military Presence at that hospital so it’s just mothers and children and uh zilinsky has posted this uh the aftermath of what happened hasn’t he on his social media yes uh it’s one of numerous video clips circulating online it shows those partly partially destroyed buildings uh of the hospital the Ukrainian Health Minister has also been at the scene he he he said that several departments have been damaged operating theaters the cancer unit as well he’s trying to assess the damage U surviving children are being relocated to other hospitals in the Ukrainian uh capital and I have to say that there’s there’s a very visible um shock on the faces of Ukraine officials who’ve been to the scene it’s a truly awful development even within the context of this awful War that’s been going on for 2 and a half years now okay butal chenko will’ll leave it there for now thank you very much for that assessment we can speak to our Ukrainian correspondent Zan B poek thank you very much for joining us um so you are in Ukraine can you give us the latest from there yes hello we just heard very loud explosion outside to new a I can say that one of the buildings of the biggest Ukrainian children’s hospital and Cave was hit in the previous day of missile attack on K uh uh there are blood signs inside the hospital so far we don’t have whether there are casualties in the children’s hospital uh the local authorities said that at least seven people uh were killed uh in k this morning as a result of uh the Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian Capital uh also confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in the other Ukrainian City in K it’s Central Ukraine uh an important industrial city um and uh it looks like uh tens tens of people were uh injured uh in the morning uh all across the country so far we have a precise number of K but it’s uh Rising unfortunately both in the Ukrainian Capital uh and outside in other cities and other regions of Ukraine the for example the residential area was damaged affected by the missile attack a couple of hours ago in Kev the residential block was held in Neo uh that’s a an important big city um closer to the south of Ukraine there often of relative relative um break and uh quietness at least only and at least for the Ukrainian Capital again the entire country is under attack and that it’s one of the deadliest uh um among those sell and drawn SS that Ukraine has already survived um Z we’re having a few issues with the with the line to you but we’re going to persevere for now I just wonder whe whether um you being in ke whether you heard anything uh of this attack whether there was there was any um sounds or um anything that you heard or saw when this happened I heard the explosion just a few minutes ago when our as I mentioned um are in the morning I had good luck I stuck in the Metro when you stuck in the Metro normally you don’t hear the sounds but for example my um niece uh she’s a child and she heard a very very loud explosion very close to her home she was alone at the time and the time of uh holidays for children in Ukraine uh she’s old and she was very scared so that’s just one very episode of the reality uh which uh ukrainians Ukrainian children have to face and we now wait for updates from there biggest Ukrainian Children’s Hospital uh which was uh had by the fragments of the Russian missile this morning okay Z pochu thank you very much for your time

A children’s hospital has been seriously damaged in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv by Russian strikes, as 24 people were killed across the country in an early morning barrage.

At least 10 people were killed in Kyiv by the rare daytime attack, including two who died at the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, which sustained major damage during the blast.

Vitaliy Klitschko, Kyiv’s mayor, said the bombardment was “one of the the worst attacks” on the capital since the start of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting Poland where he is expected to sign a security pact, said Russia must face consequences for its attacks on civilians.

  1. The day before the big NATO summit, where they were going to announce that Ukraine was not going to be granted NATO membership? Tragic, but also curious. It is time for this to stop, People need to put their pride (and profit) aside, sit at the table, and sort this out.

  2. Meanwhile, Ukraine hears talk about its defense, the defense of democracy, and the defense of the free world, and somewhere there are 1,000 "patriot" systems idle, thousands of pieces of equipment "protecting" Ukraine in warehouses.

  3. Ukrainians are sacrificing their lives for EU countries and US for nothing in return….
Everything is because of their president Zelensky!๐Ÿ˜ข

  4. Russia is God's chosen country. it was their land for 2000 years and there was never a ukraine. and in that hospital there are Azov terrorists. stop russophobia. God Jesus bless Russia ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™โ˜ฆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บโ˜ฆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ

  5. To all the clowns in the comments section: ๐Ÿคก Russia is trying to minimize civilian casualties by invading a peaceful nation, leveling city after city to the ground (as they have done in Syria, Chechnya, Georgia, etc), firing missiles at maternity wards childrenโ€™s hospitals schools and churches, targeting energy infrastructure in winter. Have you forgotten Bucha? How do the Russian occupiers treat civilians?

  6. A war crime? No. Is this a retaliatory strike by the Russian Federation for the numerous shellings of Belgorod and the Belgorod region, for the attack by NATO weapons on the beaches of Crimea with cassette bombs? It's interesting how uninformed people who support Ukraine can make events look favorable to them. When Kursk region, Belgorod, Crimea are shelled and more people die, they (those stupid people supporting Ukraine) turn a blind eye, but when Russia responded with the same, all social networks were blown up by the news. It's time to get rid of this hypocrisy, stop giving in to Ukraine and the whole NATO bloc.
