NATO summit to focus on Ukraine’s war against Russia

dozens of world leaders are in Washington today for the beginning of the summit marking 75 years since the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO the Summit is expected to largely focus on Russia the war in Ukraine and Western countries responses leaders and officials from Key indopacific allies like Japan South Korea New Zealand Australia they will also attend for the third year in a row there’s increased attention on President Biden during the summit as he receives the world leaders not only as a sitting president but as a presidential candidate for more on this I want to bring in CBS News intelligence National Security reporter Olivia gazes so Olivia what is at stake for Biden with this Summit well to an extent lens Lindsay the president has set up the stakes himself saying in a recent interview that he and only he is best positioned to be a leader within the NATO alliance that he was the one who helped strengthen it to to this point and expand it to this point and his best position to keep that going he made those remarks in a recent interview and that’s why there so little room this week for him to commit any errors or any gaffs not only in his public appearances but in his meetings with world leaders behind the scenes because he’s got to reassure them not only that he can beat president Trump in November as we know the Republican candidate has uh a very different View for the the future of NATO and for Ukraine but also to reassure these Western leaders that he can go toe-to-toe with Russian President Vladimir Putin who has to date shown no signs of back down in this conflict so we mentioned this is the 75th anniversary of NATO but a lot of attention is on non-nato countries who are coming to the summit what’s the reasoning behind having Ukraine and allies in the indopacific attend sure well in Ukraine’s case it’s because it’s got these clear and strong aspirations to eventually become a member of the NATO alliance and that’s what these Western leaders are hashing out to a large extent throughout the course of this week is language being crafted for what that trajectory ultimately looks like and that’s important because ends up uh forming the message that the alliance sends to onlookers like Russia China North Korea and Iran uh and to your point there the reason that there are other non-nato members including Australia New Zealand South Korea and Japan here also in Washington taking part in some of these events is not because they want to join the alliance per se but because of what the Ukrainian conflict means for their own backyard and the possibility of uh similar or analogous Russian uh Chinese ression towards Taiwan uh that’s why you see the South Koreans in particular publicly ruminating about the possibility of directly sending arms to the ukrainians in this conflict something that would draw that country in in in an unprecedented way as well as sending messages uh to the backers of Moscow Putin is meeting with other world leaders including India’s prime minister earlier today what impact is this ongoing War having on Russia’s status on the world stage sure well you’re certainly seeing battle lines Harden and alliances deepen the Russian president has made a big show in recent weeks of these warming relationships that he has won with North Korean leader uh Kim Jong-un with Chinese president xiin ping with leaders in Iran and India uh as you mentioned all of those countries have been integral to uh supporting Russia to some extent to varying extents during the Ukrainian conflict uh in the case of North Korea and Iran directly supplying Munitions in the case of of India and China more uh material and rhetorical support and help evading Western sanctions uh but there’s no question that at the same time while President Putin has won the dubious backing of some of these uh uh Partners he’s estranged and alienated most of Western Europe uh which he had relied on historically for significant Russian exports of oil and other natural resources Olivia gazes thank you thank you

  1. There needs to be negotiations instead of more bombs & where are the peace talks from world leaders at, oh they are on vacation how wonderful for them as they sip their wine & eat their cake while families are being slaughtered like cattle.
Why are we the U.S. tax payers paying for this foreign war, it’s a non NATO country, why not pay for peace talks instead, HELLO!
