NATO confirms F-16s for Ukraine, Canada announces plans for new sub fleet

the right honorable Justin Trudeau prime minister of Canada Washington is normally a friendly place for Canada to visit but at this NATO Summit there’s been a threat of tension over Canada’s failure to meet the alliance’s defense spending Target now the defense minister says he will release a timeline to do more I’m I’m hoping over the next few days that we’ll be able to articulate for our colleagues um a incredible and verifiable path for Canada and the Investments we have to make in I make the government now plans to move forward and buy up to a dozen new submarines to replace its aging Fleet boats that can operate under the ice in the Arctic but Canada didn’t say how much it plans to spend or when it will acquire them unless you have a budget and a schedule uh this isn’t really all that serious for his part the Prime Minister met with Ukraine’s president and committed to more support for his country’s fight against Russia we’re announcing today uh 500 million more in uh military uh Aid this year uh for Ukraine to help through uh through this very difficult situation Canada will also expand its training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 Jets the US announcing the first batch of those supersonic aircraft are on the way those Jets will be flying in the skies of Ukraine this summer to make sure that Ukraine can continue to effectively defend itself against the Russian aggression support for Ukraine is a collective focus at the summit where NATO leaders committed to a new pledge more than $40 billion in military assistance next year and a new framework to hold allies accountable after broken promises and delayed shipments hurt Ukraine on the battlefield a senior Canadian official said that timeline the defense minister hinted at is expected to be released at the summit on Thursday so we could soon know when Canada hopes to meet that 2% of GDP spending Benchmark that it’s long struggled to hit Ashley Burke CBC News Ottawa

NATO has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, including the delivery of long-promised American-made F-16 fighter jets, while Canada announced a plan to replace its aging submarine fleet.
