At least one person killed after gunshots at Trump rally | DW News

we’re following the breaking news story coming in from the US right now that an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump and he’s been injured at a rally in Pennsylvania Trump was addressing the crowd at the rally when gunshots rang out let’s take a look at what happened Secret Service officers rushed onto the stage and pulled Trump to the ground Trump grabbed his ear he was kept on the ground until he could be taken away Trump then raised his fist into the air and appeared to shout the words fight Trump had blood visible on his ear he was then LED off the stage and taken away in a vehicle authorities say the shooter has since been neutralized and a person in the crowd has been killed the Secret Service is investigating it as an apparent assassination attempt US President Joe Biden has also issued a statement after the attack at the rally I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as to the situation based on what we know now I have tried to get a hold of Donald uh he’s with his doctors uh they apparently he’s doing well I plan on talking to them shortly I hope when I get back to the uh telephone look there’s no place in America for this kind of violence it’s sick it’s sick it’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this well for more on this story I’m joined by DW Washington bureau chief enus Paul who’s joining us now from Washington DC enus this story is unbelievable there is now confirmation that gunshots were fired what more can you tell us about that yeah I think the most important news is really that uh Donald Trump former president Donald Trump is doing fairly well he is with his doctors right now and he’s checked he put out a statement or his campaigned uh put out a statement right away thanking uh law enforcement and first responder for their quick action uh during uh this uh assassination attempt I think one can talk about that uh uh right now so that’s what we know but we also know that at least one spectator is dead he got shot and two are uh in critical uh uh uh conditions so this really could have been a night in which the former president of the United States could have been shot uh he Donald Trump himself says uh that he was shot by a bullet I quote him here I was shot with a bullet that pierced the the upper part uh of my ear others say that the bullet hit um his teleprompter and that a glass Splinter kind of cut his ear but that’s definitely something uh we will learn later I mean I don’t think it’s too dramatic to say that Donald Trump was truly inches away from Death there I mean what does this mean for the country if this genuinely was an assassination attempt on former president Trump and ALS for the Republican front runner in the upcoming election exactly I know that’s exactly right what you’re saying it’s not only uh the former uh pres or a former president is the front runner uh for the Republican party and uh his nomination is just hours away the Republican National Convention uh is about or was meant uh to start tomorrow morning and he was supposed or is supposed uh to give his speech on Thursday Donald Trump to accept the nomination everything is in the air we don’t know what happened we got many many security alerts we of course here our team from Washington I myself we’re supposed to fly to Milwaukee early tomorrow morning we shall see what uh is happening there but this uh assassin assassination attempt is definitely one of the worst things that could happen in this very polarized uh American kind I think we all have to get prepared that more polit political uh violence and and social instability uh uh might just uh occur and some people are worried that Donald Trump kind of Might uh use that for his campaigning I mean for me personally this is a moment to uh stop speculating again it’s just like inches uh or he has just been inches away from from from being killed but I find it quite interesting that the sitting president uh that Joe Biden um kind of stopped all campaigning uh because we are of course in the midst of a presidential election campaign and also President Biden told his staff not to comment on this ass assassination attempt uh on uh social media Enis I want to come back to you in just a moment but first of all let’s take a look at what some of the witnesses eyewitnesses of the shooting said who were standing directly behind president Donald everybody kind of froze for a second just probably just trying to take in and realize what actually happened and then everyone in the bleachers we all had to drop and hiding in the bleachers we tried to hover the kids because we heard it’s you could hear like Ricochet through the bleachers almost like maybe shots were Hitting off the bleacher area so we tried to just cover all the kids that were near us and there were actually extra people people around us that jumped on top of the kids also to protect the kids and they kind of used their self as like a shield which was pretty cool but ask so there was no doubt right from the start what was going on right I feel like people were questionable at first and then everybody dropped but he did reach up and grab his ear and then he dropped and his shoes were laying on the on the stage so his shoes came off and as we just heard from our bureau chief there Donald Trump has said that his ear was hit by a bullet we can see in this picture up close blood on Trump’s ear and cheek this is when he was dragged Away by the Secret Service officials and Ena thanks so much for joining us again let’s talk a little bit about the security details and how this actually happened in the first place what does security look like at a rally like this especially such a big one and how could it have happened this someone potentially got a gun into the venue we are hearing reports that the shooter was outside of the venue tell me a little bit about about that walk us through it yeah I mean this is definitely question everybody is asking right now so this event took place on uh the Battle of farm show location so that’s a huge uh venue and everybody gets really screened very carefully before you go to such a rally I myself have been at many Ries Donald Trump relies Joe Biden relies CA Harris relies and in the days Hillary Clinton relies and you really get checked really thoroughly uh and as we journalists WE tv people carry a lot of gear you know we have cameras we have tripods we all have to go through these metal detectors uh then we have to put down the gear then there are coming dogs to smell if there are any explosives uh we have to leave the parameter and then come back after a couple of hours so security uh is really high so this is really a huge question how this could happen some people say uh that the shooter wasn’t in the area but shot from uh outside and I think this is more likely than him being um in uh uh the venue I just actually just get an A press statement from the Secret Service and they say I quote them here uh a a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from elevated position outside uh of the rally venue so just what we were talking about right it would have been uh very very difficult to get a gun into the venue but shooting from the outside of course was obviously uh uh possible and he was able to harm uh the president and kill one spectator and two other uh uh people are very very seriously injured it’s absolutely unbelievable and and like we’ve spoken about already this has just happened days before the Republican convention I mean what kind of impact will this make on that this is an incredibly tense situation in the US already right now is this incident going to make things even worse this country is so polarized anyhow and you know we always have to bear in mind that in the United States we have more weapons and than people uh so many many Americans have a couple of weapons or own a couple of weapons and of course many of them are uh uh Trump supporters um so this is definitely a kind of a huge uh threat and uh people are really aware that in this very uh polarized uh situation uh more really instability may occur over the next couple of days and weeks and you know what really strike me when uh Donald Trump um got uh injured then he of course was brought down by the Secret Service which who was they were immediately at him but when he got up he raised his fist and also when they walked him uh to this uh big car we all know these images from other attempts or attacks on on uh State head of states or maybe also from movies normally they just kind of go into the car and being brought away being brought to safety because you never know if there are more Shooters in the area but Donald Trump with blood in his face raised his fist and apparently said fight fight fight so this of course was a message uh to his supporters and uh we shall see to what that might lead I’m sure that will no doubt be used in his future campaigning what’s the reaction being like to this in the US so uh we just uh heard uh Joe Biden talking here he stopped all his campaigning he gave this little um statement on uh camera he was apparently just in charge when he learned uh uh that uh Donald Trump was shot at he said that and that I found that quite interesting he referred to him as Donald not Donald Trump or the former president that’s a very kind of familiar approach and he said uh that he’s will be trying to reach out to him and that he uh wants to talk to him and um I am also then he also put out a statement later Joe Biden did and I quote him here as well he Joe Biden said there is no place for this kind of violence in America we must unite as one nation uh to condemn it so he’s definitely he and his staff they definitely definitely aware how Danger dangerous this situation is and how possible it is that some uh of Donald Trump’s uh hardcore supporters might be all kind of Ed up by this Asin assassination uh attempt uh so many people really try now to calm down the situation and the the posts uh and the emails are kindly just of slowly uh pouring in uh but I’m I already when I check Twitter or other social media Outlets I also see quite the opposite that uh people uh use this moment uh to blame uh Joe Biden uh for this astion attempt so yeah it’s it’s going to be um some very crucial hours and probably a days before we really see where this might lead to and I’m sure this image Donald Trump having blood spots in his face raising the fist this will be one of the major image images uh we will see over the course of the next months until November 5th until election day yeah certainly seems like this has the potential to wreak further division across an already very damaged United States Enis pul our Washington bureau chief thank you so much for
