At a secret base outside Berlin, hundreds of Ukrainian troops are undergoing a six-week crash course covering the basics of trench warfare and urban combat. But even there, unidentified drones are buzzing above the Ukrainians, Politico reports.
Rather than intervene, German military officials say, soldiers are being asked to include potential enemy drones in their training as preparation for the front lines, where they will encounter Russian drones that will try to kill them.
“We suspect that at least some of these drones are being operated with hostile intent,” said Lieutenant Colonel Roland Bosker.
Although there were no drones in the sky the day Politico visited, Ukrainian troops kept their eyes up during the drills. At the same time, instructors say jamming drones is not easy.
“It is technically impossible to block all frequencies that could be used to control drones,” Bosker explained.
Even if geofence jamming technology is deployed, it will also disable the radio stations used for communication within the test site, and spies will still find a way to penetrate such a large area.
“Compare this to tank armor. There will always be ammunition that can penetrate even the best armor,” the lieutenant colonel added.
At the same time, Boxer is not sure whether these UAVs are connected with Russia, but it is obvious that this could be part of Moscow’s efforts aimed at destabilizing and demoralizing Western partners who support Ukraine.
It’s not just drones. Instructors have been contacted by strangers as part of suspected honey-trap operations too, Bosker said.
