Russia’s vast stocks of Soviet-era weapons are running out due to war in Ukraine

The Russian Federation might feel the scarcity of equipment it inherited from the USSR next year. That’s according to The Economist.

“Although the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated that in February of this year Russia may have had about 3,200 tanks in storage to draw on up to 70% of them “have not moved an inch since the beginning of the war”. A large proportion of the t-72s have been stored uncovered since the early 1990s and are probably in very poor condition,” the article reads, citing the IISS experts.

They have reached a conclusion that Russian tank and infantry vehicle refurbishment from storage is expected to hit a “critical point of exhaustion” by the second half 2025.

Ironically, many Soviet weapons and components are in Ukraine, and Kharkiv was the main producer of turrets for T-72 tanks.

Additionally, it is suggested that Russia lacks workers who can maintain the necessary production.

Most intelligence sources report that in the two years of war Russia had lost about 3,000 tanks and 5,000 other armoured vehicles. For example, Dutch Oryx has either photo or video evidence of 3,235 tanks destroyed, but adds that the actual number is likely “significantly higher”.

Aleksandr Golts, an analyst at the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies, says Vladimir Putin has the old Politburo to thank for the huge stockpiles of weapons built up during the Cold War.

He says Soviet leaders knew that Western military kit was much more advanced than their own, so they opted for mass, churning out thousands of armoured vehicles in peacetime in case of war.

Before its demise, says Golts, the Soviet Union had as many armoured vehicles as the rest of the world put together.

When the then-Russian defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, boasted in December last year that 1530 tanks had been delivered in the course of the year, he omitted to say that almost 85 per cent of them, according to an assessment by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a London think-tank, were not new tanks but old ones (mainly T-72s, also T-62s and even some T-55s dating from just after the World War II) that had been taken out of storage and given a wash and brush-up.

Since the invasion, about 175 reasonably modern T-90m tanks have been sent to the front line. Annual production this year could be approaching 90.

  1. Mi sembra di vedere la fine del regime Nazista carri armati distrutti soldati che disertano ,scappano e questa è la Russia ,ha gia voi filo russi dite che và tutto bene no? 🔥Forza Ucraina

  2. russian soldiers have been seen conducting assault-operations on dirt-bikes, golf-carts, and unarmoured cars and trucks. I can assure you that russia can feel the shortages of armoured vehicles right now, they don't have to wait until next year…

  4. Russian General affirms it, it is true that they are deplet4d of Soviet era tanks, but still have thousands of T-80 and T90 and Armata tanks.

  5. Le travail de mécanicien russe sur les tanks ils doivent être rempli de travail jusqu'au jour oui le restera plus beaucoup de tanks…..

  6. They cant send all tanks they have, they need to keep at least 3000 in operation, for basic defense..

So, they have less than 2000 tanks to go in ukraine..
APCs are already in red numbers..

  7. The Russians are running out of old weapons and material, especially new ones, that's why I think they will not be a threat to Europe, even if Trump is elected. Then again, Trump may want something from Russia before a "peace" is negotiated, which will not be good for Russia, no one can predict what Trump would do if he is in power again. But I know he would want the best deal.

  8. The Soviet-era weapons are by far Russia's best weapons. They were made at a time when Russia had money and expert technicians, and most of the good weapons were made in Ukraine. Modern Russia has none of that now. It's a pale shell of the Soviet Union. There's no money, their best technicians are dead, they have no workers for the factories, and Ukraine won't give them the time of day, let alone build tanks for them.
Add to this that the Soviet weapons were inferior to NATO weapons even 30 years ago. Now there are fewer of them and they're 30 years further into obsolescence.

  9. Sadly none of this matters. Trump is a Russian asset, who will most likely win the election. Though the Democrats are determined to continue supporting Ukraine. Trump has stated numerous times. That he intends to immediately end the war and force the Ukrainians to hand over half their country to Russia.
