The mint have said that there are enough in circulation. They have been pointless since the 90s in my opinion, even more so now.
I’d be interested to know how anyone uses these, other than giving change for things that are marked at .99 p.
Can we make this a permanent state of affairs and withdraw the coins currently in circulation? That, or redenominate them so that a penny is worth more – let’s say ten pence.
Australians removed these from circulation in 1992 and just implemented rounding up and down with cash. After a while of people being annoyed at rounding up a couple of cents and pushing petrol pumps to 3 cents over for a cheeky “round down”, deal, everyone just got used to it as normal.
That being said, 1p = 1.94c in today’s money, so it’s not entirely the same.
