Spain’s housing crisis sees homelessness rise as tourism booms • FRANCE 24 English

Carmen Cajamarca has been renting a flat in the same Madrid building for 25 years. But now, the building’s owner has decided to turn the apartments into holiday rentals and Carmen and her neighbours have been told they have to leave. They are among a growing number of Spaniards who are finding themselves being priced out of the rental market amid a boom in short-term rentals on platforms such as Airbnb that, combined with a lack of social housing, has seen some forced to live on the streets.

  1. Ban Airbnb may sound like a solution but it’s not, the high prices on food, long rental and low salaries are the problem thanks to tourism. So it is sad to say but TOURISTS GO HOME!!!!

  2. People have been resenting AirBnB for these reasons. Just ban the company so their users wont buy/utilize your country's property as such

  3. That room is great? Thats like less than 1/6 if my current room in Nigeria. What is happening is Europe?
Capitalism must be balanced with a bit of socialism otherwise what you get is very rich with very poor, a missing middle class.
Human beings are not machines for work only ,we are not inputs to generate wealth.

  4. A persons property is his/hers to do what they want, we have to respect that! So,regulations should be put in place to control the number of properties any one individual or business may have to let. It is unfortunate that hardworking people are being thrown out onto the street to accommodate tourists., but it is not the tourists fault!

  5. Why are you blaming tourists? Tourism generates income for your community. Blame the businesses that take homes away from locals. We have a planned trip to Spain and Portugal (where we planned to stay at hotels), but going somewhere else SAFE 😤

  6. The blame is with your Government not the Tourists. The tourists bring their hard earned money to your country and contribute greatly €€€. You need to talk to your Government

  7. Tourism can be of great benefit to countries economically some countries survive mainly based on tourism it’s not being properly regulated by the government also you can’t just ban airbnb because it’s people’s way of earning an income it just needs to be regulated properly. Cancel culture is ridiculous there’s better solutions for everyone involved to benefit from the main issue is greed

  8. Wall Street’s Land Grab: Firms Amass Rental Empire, Ousting Tenants & Threatening New Housing Crisis
    HIC
    The Blackstone Group, a private
equity firm, is now the largest owner of single-family rental homes in the
country. In one day alone, Blackstone bought up 1,400 houses in Atlanta. And as
private equity firms gobble up huge swaths of the housing market, they are
partnering with big banks to bundle the mortgages on these rental homes into a
new financial product known as “rental-backed securities,”
reminiscent of the “mortgage-backed securities” that helped cause the
last financial crisis. Could this new private equity rental empire help spark
the next housing crisis? We are joined by Laura Gottesdiener, author of “A
    Dream Foreclosed:

  9. Meanwhile in the UK "I can't wait to leave this dreadful ghastly weather, dearly, and move to España. Those Spanish blokes sure are living the good life." while in Spain, rents are increasing and many renters, mainly elders, and building owners are victims of Okupadas i.e. squatters.

  10. Tourism, Airbnb’s are the end of everything, people come from all over the world to buy places just to make them into Airbnb’s, obviously natives can’t compete with international millionaires and billionaires hoarding everything of value everywhere.

  11. Welcome to the EU…Where your country is no longer your own..problems everywhere..in UK foreigners get preference over natives..it’s a European crisis and needs to be addressed..

  12. I lived on Paris and Barcelona and they are full of homeless, the politiancs are the worst people ever they dont care abous us.

  13. Its not turusm. Its lots of people are coming to live in spain. And spanish law allows eu citizens to take loans from spanish banks to invest in real estate. Polish activelly buy now because of fear of russian polish war. And lack of bew construction.
