A couple of things from past elections. First, a candidate gets a bounce from conventions. After the DNC in 1988 Dukakis had a double digit lead, for example. This year, Trump has had his convention, so right now we are seeing his bounce. Kamala will get a bounce from her convention.
Next, as the election draws near the incumbent party tends to increase. Again, 1988 is a great example of this. For that matter, Trump began to close the gap in 2020. Even in 1968 Humphrey was closing the gap towards the last few weeks. The one big exception to this was 1980, when Carter went the other way.
If those historic trends hold up (which, of course, is a big “if”), Trump may well be at his high water mark right now, and it’s all downhill from here. Kamala’s rise in the polls is probably a combination of familiarity with her and Trump fatigue (after hearing from him constantly for the last nine years do they really want him all over the TV for the next four?)

I’m hoping that we’re at the start of a feedback loop where Trump goes on a tirade, GOP elected officials start to distance themselves (like in Arizona), which causes him to go on a bigger tirade, which causes more officials to withdraw support, which causes an even bigger tirade and so on.
I’m having some massive 2016 deja vu right now. I know things are a lot different, but also, things are a lot different. In 2016 Trump and his campaign were incompetent amateurs who didn’t even know how to perform a transition. In 2024 Trump is backed by competent backers who see their shit at ending this country as we know it. In 2016 Trump got lucky in a lot of ways. In 2024, Trump and his backers are stacking the deck.
