Scottish Government ‘will need to find £100m to mitigate Labour cuts’

  1. This only discusses Labour’s decision to means test the winter fuel payment. As the winter fuel payment is devolved, if the Scottish Government wanted to maintain its universality, they would need to find around £100Mn to mitigate that from their own budget. Which, with other budgetary pressures and possible cuts, I’m not sure would be the best idea.

    >The Public Finance Minister told the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland that the Scottish Government had been expecting to receive around £180m to cover the costs of the Winter Fuel Payment, but that would “clearly be a much lower number now”.

    >Asked if the Scottish Government could guarantee that the Winter Fuel Payment would remain universal north of the Border, McKee said: “Of course, the Winter Fuel Payment is now being devolved to Scotland from this September, so we’ll have to very closely look at what we can do.

    >“We would very much like to keep the universal aspect of that benefit, but we need to look at the numbers very, very closely.

  2. Money that was put aside for independence campaigning might be a good place to look first.

Edit: that will be the “intellectuals” downvoting me, then 🙄

  3. This is daft. Three points.

    1.

£1.6bn less because of the winter fuel allowance, but surely an extra £11,6bn because of doctors pay?

    2.

    > Ivan McKee, the Scottish Minister for Public Finance, told the BBC that the fact his government had been given only 90 minutes’ notice of the cuts in Rachel Reeves’s speech showed Labour’s claimed reset of devolved relationships “clearly hasn’t happened”

This is how it works. Announce policy in the commons first, otherwise the speaker gets upset.

    3.

Nothing about the 20bn black hole caused by the Tories withholding information in the last few months?

  4. The grey pound is the strongest in the country. The era of handouts to people who got a free education, fell into cushy jobs, then retired on gold plated pensions after buying their houses for £30k must come to an end. It’s absurd.

  5. It’s time the elderly started paying their fair share.

I know there’s plenty of old age poverty, but there are also huge numbers of elderly people living obscenely comfortable lives. The young should not be doing all the heavy lifting when they can barely afford to buy homes or have kids themselves.

Cutting winter fuel payments for those that don’t need it should only be the start of a much larger generational redistribution of wealth.

  6. Labour knowing they won’t be able to deliver their housing promises have decided to freeze pensioners to death to free up some housing stock

  7. Instead of taking winter fuel money from the elderly, I would have suggested turning down the heating in prisons first.

  8. Honestly I’m scared to even wipe my arse on the Snational in case I catch something. It’s getting to tRumpian levels of propagandist nonsense.

  9. Pensioners living in high Council tax bands have already saved tons from the Council tax freeze.

  10. Tbf it should be means tested. 1 in 4 pensioners in the UK is a millionaire. Whilst the demographics might be slightly different in Scotland, surely isn’t massively so.

  11. The fucktards in the Scottish government are a joke so won’t hold my breath that they will mitigate anything.

  12. Would Barmett take acco7nt of the extra to the public sector amd junior doctors? Could that be used?
