Just one hour after Daniel Wiffen became only the fourth athlete from Northern Ireland to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics, fellow swimmer and close friend Jack McMillan became the fifth.

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland 4x200m Freestyle team retained their Olympic title with an electrifying performance in a thrilling final. Silver went to the USA with Australia claiming bronze.

Belfast man McMillan did not race in the final, with Tom Dean, Matt Richards, Duncan Scott and James steering Team GB to victory in a time of 6.59.43.

However, McMillan and fellow replacement Kieran Bird will both receive a gold medal as they competed in Tuesday’s morning’s heating, that saw Britain book their place in the decider with a time of 7:05.11. The Bangor Swimming Club star recorded a time of 1:45.68, the second fastest split in the team.

McMillan competed for Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but opted to switch to Great Britain in 2022.

  1. Well done Jack … it’s a pity you didn’t actually swim in the final. Never mind, next time maybe, eh?

  2. Olympic golds are like buses it seems. Congrats lads some achievement for both

  3. I’m over the moon for Larne. An Olympic gold medal for Ireland! Over the moon.

  4. Super performance in the heats knowing you’re going to be cut for the final. They were always going to go with the winning team from Tokyo for the final.Glad he got his medal though definitely played his part.
