Might be a very dumb question but why was the Korean athlete everyone was talking about wearing those cool glasses and are they essential? This Turkish athlete for example doesn’t have that equipment and he came 2nd place.

  1. Those are shooting glasses, and they’re not required to compete but they can help.

The square piece is a blinder so that the shooter doesn’t have to squint their non-dominant eye closed, which causes strain.

The round piece is an iris that helps to focus on the target (the same principle applies if you squeeze your hand together to make a tiny pinhole and look through it). Shooters aren’t allowed to use any optics aside from a prescription lens that they’d wear anyway on normal glasses.

  2. It’s a matter of preference. I use shooting glasses because 1) I’m more comfortable with them, and 2) my eye has a weird condition that makes me tear up a lot, so using an iris helps keep the focus sharp. Also, I have a special lens in my glasses that forces me to focus on the sights when my eye is relaxed. My eyes get very tired without it.

  3. That guy looks like he is about to try and sell me an AI powered vegetable juicer.

  4. He is an ex-professional soldier. The Turkish military teaches aiming with two eyes open.

  5. James Bond about to take out an agent for Spectre while hanging out at the pool!

  6. Has he got his hand in his pocket as well? I know he probably feels more comfortable without the gadgets, but it’s funny without context as he just looks like “dude who turned up” 😅

  7. He looks relaxed and focussed. If this guy isn’t former military, I would be surprised.

  8. If you just played a show with your band weezer, you’d probably want to dress down afterwards too.

  9. I like the contrast between the two. This guy just looks like someone’s dad and he’s just as good haha

  10. This Turkish guy looks like a legend. Picking his school from school, buying some bread and competiting in the Olympics on the same day.

  11. I love how this middle-aged Turkish man just rocks up dressed for, like, a barbecue or something and wins a silver in the Olympic Games.

  12. Because he has a military background, he has no problem with aiming and shooting with both eyes open, so he doesn’t need special goggles.

Earphones are used to prevent concentration loss due to noise. The guy has a military background. He’s probably been in much noisier and more stressful environments.
