London borough warns it faces bankruptcy over housing costs

Some shocking stats in here – Newham overspending by £40million a year on temporary accommodation. It’s driving them to bankruptcy and they’re not the only ones. London housing is screwed

  1. Imagine how many houses they can build with that overspend.

But then there’s the problem, it takes years to get from planning permission to building, not being helped by NIMBYs

  2. This borough has always had to cope with doing more with less. In terms of central government funding, Newham is classed as an outer London Borough (and therefore receives a smaller amount than neighbouring inner London boroughs) yet it is the poorest of these by a very very long way.

  3. Was Newham screwed out of money by Robert Jenrick? Or was that somewhere else?

  4. I live in Tower Hamlets and my neighbours are Newham council tenants because that was the only house their council could find for them that met their needs.

I bet the council is paying the owner an obscene amount every month and it’s ridiculous because it used to be a council house before.

    Thanks right to buy!

  5. The whole system is kind of screwed. Anecdotal but sharing in case any of you have noticed the same.

I know at least 2 cases of people on social benefits / social housing when they do not actively need it (they have side hustles which do not declare). It is also way too common to find out social housing rented for short term contracts / Airbnb.

If we normalise a no-control system both for people taking benefits out of nowhere + landlords using literal social housing for short term profit, of course money goes out fast AND long term renters do not find a suitable place to live

  6. One, London doesn’t build nearly enough homes, two, the council tax is an absolute joke for high value properties and hurts the revenue of local governments.

  7. If only there was something we could do to fix the housing issues, oh well the free market will solve it I’m sure
